Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh changing last name over 'painful events', claims attorney
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's daughter Shiloh, 18, has reportedly decided to change her last name following some "painful events".
Shiloh reportedly filed for the name change on her 18th birthday, May 27. The change was publicly announced with a legal notice in the Los Angeles Times.
Recently, Shiloh's attorney Peter Levine spoke about her decision to drop "Pitt" from her last name in a statement.
Shiloh’s decision follows her sister Vivienne Jolie-Pitt's decision in May to drop their father Brad Pitt's last name and instead use only "Jolie" from her mother Angelina Jolie's surname.
Shiloh Jolie's attorney discusses petition to change her last name
Levine recently discussed Shiloh's prominent decision and the careful approach she took, People reported.
Levine said, “The media should be more careful in their reporting, especially when covering a young adult who has made an independent and significant decision following painful events, and is merely following legal process.”
Clarifying the process, he added, “Shiloh Jolie did not take out an ‘ad’ announcing any name change, and any press reporting that is inaccurate. As Shiloh’s attorney, I am required to publish a legal notice because the law in California requires that of anyone who wants to change their name. That legal notice was published in the Los Angeles Times, as is required.”
Legal expert David Glass provided additional insights regarding Shiloh's name change petition. “She has to file a formal petition with the court to change her name. And she has to run an ad 4 weeks in a row before the hearing is scheduled, in addition to giving both of her parents written notification,” he explained.
Glass noted that such petitions typically proceed smoothly and are granted unless the individual has a criminal history and is attempting to avoid punishment or liabilities.
He added, “Brad could come to court and say, for example, that Shiloh has been alienated against him by the mother. … But because she is no longer a minor, she can essentially call herself whatever she wants.”
Angelina Jolie slammed as daughter Shiloh drops dad Brad Pitt's last name
After reading Shiloh's attorney's statement and comments from another legal expert about her petition, social media users took to the comments section of the outlet to criticize Angelina Jolie for providing her daughter with a negative impression of Brad Pitt.
One user slammed Shiloh and wrote, "This young lady should be taught the art of forgiveness, so her Dad made mistakes, his love for her is stronger than the mistakes he made."
Another said, "It’s sad how the trauma has been passed down to their kids. There’s 2 sides to every story. Angelina and her own father have issues. She’s doing it to her kids now."
One person wrote about Jolie, "She is a vicious mother."
Another asserted, "Sad. Children should never take sides and parents should never degrade the other parent."
One individual added, "Terrible... Her mom influenced her decision.
