NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Angelina Jolie has once again made headlines with her recent Vogue Mexico photoshoot, with December cover sparking a wave of polarized reactions.

While Jolie's interview revealed a deeply introspective side as she discussed releasing "private pain" and preparing for her role as opera legend Maria Callas, many fans took issue with her melancholic portrayal on the magazine's cover.

Fans feel Angelina Jolie’s Vogue Mexico cover oozes 'so much pain'

Draped in a black Christian Dior dress, her flowing brunette hair and somber expression painted an introspective image as photographed by Dan Martensen.

While some appreciated the depth and vulnerability conveyed, others criticized the cover for being "unflattering" and accused the editorial team of failing to do justice to the 49-year-old 'Gia' star’s timeless beauty.

“She looks really sad here, like she got the worst possible news just before she walked on set,” one commenter wrote, Daily Mail reported.

Another on theFashionSpot forum was harsher: “It takes skill to make Angelina Jolie look this bad.”

A particular viewer expressed, "I don't ever remember Jolie looking happy, healthy and spry."

Following suit, another observer added, "She looks to be a very sad girl. I wish she had a better relationship with her father John. Also with Brad. At least for the sake of the children."

A follower contributed, "Enough of her “pain”.

A comment underscored, "She doesn't look sad she IS sad!"

Another comment echoed, "She is sad, she has never stated differently. She has depression."

Angelina Jolie says playing Maria Callas helped her heal from Brad Pitt split

In her interview, Jolie revealed how stepping into the shoes of Maria Callas helped her confront her inner struggles, particularly stemming from her tumultuous split from Brad Pitt in 2016.

“Opera made me visit the deeper parts of myself,” she shared, adding that learning to sing for the role forced her to access emotions she had long suppressed.

"I had to take a deep breath and let it all out, and in between that, I also had to let out my real voice... where I carried my private pain, my gentleness, and a lot of things that I felt I didn’t own," Jolie said.

"There’s something that happens in these beautiful pieces of music that you can’t sing unless you can access a certain part of yourself."

The actress explained how this exploration of her voice became symbolic of her personal journey.

“I hadn’t really understood how much we hold in our bodies, how much we carry throughout life and how all of that changes and affects our sound and our voice. And I don’t just mean the audible part of our voice, but our true voice: the way we communicate with each other.”

Jolie spent six months training to sing for 'Maria', and the process appears to have been both a professional and personal transformation.

Brad Pitt plans cozy Thanksgiving with girlfriend Ines de Ramon

The timing of the Vogue feature coincides with renewed interest in Jolie and Pitt's acrimonious split, which reportedly stemmed from a 2016 plane incident.

Jolie has accused Pitt of assaulting her and their children during that flight - claims he has vehemently denied.

In the interview, Jolie did not directly address the incident but spoke broadly about channeling her pain into her art.

Maria has already generated Oscars buzz, with a limited theatrical release set for November 27 before hitting Netflix on December 11.

The film will explore the triumphs and tragedies of Maria Callas’ life, opening in her final days before looking back at her storied career.

As Jolie reflects on her private struggles through her art, Pitt seems to have moved on to a quieter chapter with his girlfriend, Ines de Ramon.
