Ariana Grande fans demand Chelsea Handler apologize after she jokes singer fell in love with a 'munchkin'

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA: Chelsea Handler left Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater fans infuriated after she made a "distasteful" joke about them while hosting the 30th Critics' Choice Awards on Friday, February 7. 

The comedian, who took digs at several celebrities in attendance, said in her monologue, "We're gonna spend the night celebrating all the love and success in this room. It is so nice to see some of our most beloved child stars all grown up and thriving," as per RadarOnline.

"Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Ariana Grande are all nominated tonight. And now, Ariana has even found love with a munchkin," Chelsea Handler said referring to the pop star's romance with Ethan Slater, who starred as Boq, a munchkin man, in 'Wicked'.

When no one laughed, the 49-year-old added, "That's good news, everybody!"

Grande and Slater first met when they began filming 'Wicked' in 2022. Sources confirmed in mid-2023 that the co-stars were dating after both separated from their then-partners.

Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater's fans didn't find Chelsea Handler's jab amusing and many took to social media to call her out. 

One wrote, "Ewww the second hand embarrassment," and another said, "The way NOBODY laughed😭😭she forgot this is a CLASSY event💀."

"Wildly distasteful. Critics Choice Awards should be ashamed of themselves," a fan fumed, while someone else declared, "Chelsea needs to apologize that was cruel."

Another demanded, "@chelseahandler APOLOGIZE OR STAY BOTCHED," with one more adding, "Yikes 😵‍💫 she needs to learn the difference between comedy and just being a b***h lol."

"The silence is funnier than the joke," one more quipped about the audience being silent after she made the joke.

However, this was not all, Chelsea Handler was also slammed online for calling Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively’s legal drama a "distraction."

She said, "I want to acknowledge that we've been through a lot lately, not just here in Los Angeles, but our entire country, waking up every day not knowing what news we are going to hear that will disappoint or horrify us," as per The Irish Star.

"Oh, it is important at times like these to have a distraction, and that's why I want to personally extend my gratitude to Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively," she stated.

Handler went on to add, "I think everybody in this room, no matter whose side you're on, we can all agree to accept that there's probably not going to be a sequel. It ends with us, guys."
