Armie Hammer seeks second chance in Hollywood after controversy: 'I made these problems for myself'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actor Armie Hammer is seeking to rebuild his Hollywood career following his dramatic fall from grace in 2021, while reflecting on the controversies that derailed his professional life in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on Tuesday, June 16.
While continuing to deny the allegations made against him, Hammer accepted some responsibility for the circumstances surrounding his downfall and spoke candidly about the scandal, its impact on his life, and his return to acting after nearly five years away from major projects.
Armie Hammer addresses controversies and career fallout
Hammer's conduct first came under public scrutiny in January 2021, when a woman publicly shared messages allegedly from him that contained explicit content and disturbing fantasies. Reflecting on the events, he told The Hollywood Reporter, “I made these problems for myself. This didn't happen to me by a fluke accident. I didn't do what people are saying I did."
He continued, "But I brought very dangerous and unsafe people into my life, and I pissed off people in my life — and here we are.” Shortly after the allegations surfaced, his former partner, Courtney Vucekovich, came forward with similar accusations.
Around the same time, he exited multiple projects, including 'Shotgun Wedding' opposite actress Jennifer Lopez and 'The Offer,' a behind-the-scenes retelling of the making of 'The Godfather.' He was also dropped by William Morris Endeavor (WME) the following month.
Responding to the allegations at the time, Hammer said in a statement obtained, “I'm not responding to these claims, but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic,”
He also said that, "Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I'm grateful to them for that.”
Later in March 2021, he was also accused of abuse by Effie Angelova, the woman who first raised allegations against him in January, with claims of misconduct during a four-hour incident that took place in 2017.
Armie Hammer opens up about long-awaited acting return
His attorney, Andrew Brettler, previously stated that his relationship with Angelova was "completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory." The controversy also led to his departure from several projects, financial difficulties, and a move from Los Angeles to the Cayman Islands, where his father lived.
Looking back, Hammer said he eventually adopted a mindset of acceptance rather than publicly fighting the allegations. “There was nothing I could say that was going to fix anything for me," he added. Now, he is preparing for a return to acting with the upcoming film 'Citizen Vigilante,' directed by Uwe Boll.
He described receiving his first acting offer in five years as an emotional moment. “I’m pretty sure I cried,” he said of getting his first job offer in five years.
He further said, “It was just this moment where I was like: I’m going to get to do the thing that I love more than anything — other than my children.” Hammer also acknowledged that he was eager to resume work regardless of the project's scale.
“I would have done a cat food commercial. I just wanted to work again," he expressed. At this stage of his career, he said, “Lately, they always say on the first day of set, we can’t believe we actually got you to do this, and I’m like my schedule was pretty open.”
