WASHINGTON, DC: Kamala Harris is infusing her presidential campaign with a sense of empowerment, thanks to Beyonce. The Democratic candidate electrified her campaign headquarters with the anthem 'Freedom' from Beyonce’s 2016 'Lemonade' album.

CNN reported that Harris received explicit permission from Beyonce to use the song just hours before her entrance, signaling a significant cultural endorsement.

A source close to Harris confirmed that Beyonce’s team approved to use 'Freedom' not only on that night but throughout the presidential campaign.

While Beyonce has not officially endorsed Harris for the presidency, her support for the use of the song suggests a tacit approval. Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles, has already publicly supported Harris.

The artist’s history of political engagement includes endorsing the Biden/Harris ticket in 2020, performing for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and supporting Barack Obama at his second inauguration in 2013.

The song 'Freedom,' featuring Kendrick Lamar, although not a single, peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2016 and remains a powerful anthem, especially in the context of social justice movements like those following George Floyd’s murder.

Harris’ campaign may feature various songs, but 'Freedom' stands out for its potential impact on younger and middle-aged voters. In 2020, Harris chose Mary J Blige’s 'Work That' for her victory speech, demonstrating her strategic use of music to connect with audiences.

Monday, July 22, saw a fusion of politics and music as Charli XCX, another influential artist, appeared to endorse Harris by posting "Kamala IS Brat," referencing her album. Harris’ campaign embraced the shout-out, adopting the album’s aesthetic in their memes.

Musicians supporting Harris include Ariana Grande, Barbra Streisand, John Legend, Katy Perry, Janelle Monáe, Carole King, Lizzo, Demi Lovato, Lil Nas X, Cardi B, Moby, Questlove, and Kesha.

In contrast, many artists, including the Rolling Stones and Tom Petty, have objected to Donald Trump using their music.
