Brooke Shields reveals why her ‘Friends’ character was a career turning point

Shields appeared in the 1996 post-Super Bowl episode of 'Friends', 'The One After the Super Bowl,' playing Erika Ford, an obsessed fan who believed Joey Tribbiani, played by actor Matt LeBlanc, was actually his soap opera character, Dr. Drake Ramoray.

The episode also featured guest stars Julia Roberts, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Fred Willard, and Dan Castellaneta. Looking back on the role, she said, “I was on with all these movie stars, and I got one of the funniest parts.”

One memorable moment involved Erika licking Joey’s fingers. According to her, producers initially felt the scene made her character appear “too crazy.” She recalled, “I had this thing where I licked Joey's fingers because I thought that was so funny. And they thought that was too much.”

After filming an alternate version without the gesture, Shields said the scene was ultimately restored. “I was like, ‘Please, trust me.’ And we shot it both ways. And then [showrunner] Kevin Bright put it back in because it was so outrageous,” she said.

The actress explained that audiences were not accustomed to seeing her in such a wildly comedic role. She stated, “People weren't expecting me to do comedy and certainly not to be like this crazy person. I was laughing maniacally. It was comedy gold.”

She added that the role allowed people to see beyond her established public image, “It wasn't me being a supermodel. It was me being this crazy person.”

Brooke Shields reveals how ‘Friends’ changed the trajectory of her career

According to Shields, the positive response to her performance had a major effect on her career trajectory. “That changed everything for me,” she said. “It changed my career. It was sort of the beginning of Suddenly Susan.”

The actress credited the sitcom with helping her establish herself in comedy and demonstrating that she could succeed outside of the image people already had of her. She also reflected on her time working with the Friends cast during a previous appearance on 'The View.'

She admitted feeling nervous because the cast was already so close, “I was terrified because they were all such a tight-knit group."

Wanting to fit in, she decided to join in on an ongoing joke involving actor Matthew Perry, recalling the moment, Shields said, “I just ran and threw myself on the ground and looked up Matthew Perry's pant leg.” At first, the reaction worried her.

She remembered, “Everybody was silent, I thought, ‘Oh my God, I've just ruined my career.” But the moment quickly turned around, “And then Matthew Perry started laughing, and then everybody started laughing."
