LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: James Gunn, the creative force behind the new DC Universe (DCU), has chosen Milly Alcock, known for her role as the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s 'House of the Dragon,' to don the cape as Supergirl.

With the 22-year-old now set to portray a more grizzled take on the iconic Kryptonian heroine, the Internet is buzzing with thoughts on how she will portray the DC Universe’s Girl of Steel, as per TheWrap.

While full details are yet to be released, the project is supposedly based on the recent DC comics run 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira has been tapped to pen the script, but no director is yet attached.

This marks a massive opportunity for the rising star Alcock to lead her own superhero tentpole after her breakout performance in the first season of HBO's hit 'Game of Thrones' spinoff series, 'House of the Dragon'.

The Australian actress won widespread acclaim for her fierce and nuanced portrayal of the aspiring heir to the Iron Throne. Even after Rhaenyra was recast with an older actress for the second half of the first season, Alcock left an indelible mark on the show.

Milly Alcock's Supergirl promises a grittier version of Kara Zor-El than past portrayals

While Supergirl has been depicted on both film and television in recent years, Gunn has emphasized that he wants the new DCU to present completely fresh takes on these iconic DC characters.

The source material of 'Woman of Tomorrow' also promises a grittier, more battle-hardened version of Kara Zor-El than past portrayals. Having grown up witnessing the destruction of Krypton firsthand, this Supergirl arrives on Earth at age 14 with much more trauma and emotional baggage.

As Gunn explained, "She's not exactly the Supergirl we're used to seeing." This intense backstory could allow Alcock to bring a new sense of depth and complexity to such an iconic female superhero role.

Beyond the star's obvious acting talents, locking her down as Supergirl also represents a hugely strategic casting move by Gunn and Safran as they architect their new DC Universe plan.

Alcock aligns perfectly with their vision to center these films around fresh faces that can grow into their roles over the life of this ambitious storytelling canvas.

She joins Nicholas Hoult as Superman’s classic nemesis, Lex Luthor, and an impressive contingent of rising stars hand-picked to form the new Justice League, such as David Corenswet as Superman and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.
