Charlie Kirk's family urges court to release evidence against Tyler Robinson: 'World should see it'
PROVO, UTAH: Charlie Kirk's family is urging a Utah court to make evidence presented during the preliminary hearing against Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing the conservative activist, publicly available, arguing that greater transparency would strengthen confidence in the judicial process.
The request came as attorneys continued debating whether key pieces of evidence, including a recorded interview with the suspect's former roommate, should be released while the criminal case remains in its early stages.
The hearing is expected to determine whether prosecutors have presented sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
Charlie Kirk family seeks evidence transparency
The family's position was presented in court on Wednesday, July 8, by attorney Jeffrey Neiman, who represents Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, as well as his parents.
Addressing the court, Neiman said the family believed evidence introduced during the preliminary hearing should be accessible to the public rather than remain sealed.
“The Kirk family believes strongly that if the evidence is being admitted in this preliminary hearing, it should be made public for the world to see,” Neiman told the court.
“To not be transparent here, to not be open, to not let the world see what happened, will create doubt and distrust in the judicial system. And that's not what anybody wants,” he added.

The issue arose as prosecutors sought to introduce some of the most significant evidence disclosed so far, including a recorded interview with Robinson's former roommate, Lance Twiggs, along with text messages, Discord conversations, and other communications investigators say are relevant to the case.
Judge Tony Graf directed prosecutors to prepare a redacted version of the material after hearing arguments from both sides, with edited excerpts expected to be reviewed when proceedings resume.
Defense opposes Charlie Kirk evidence release
Tyler Robinson’s attorney, Richard Novak, argued against publicly releasing the interview and related communications, contending that widespread publication could undermine his client's constitutional right to a fair trial.

According to the defense, prosecutors are expected to characterize Twiggs' interview and digital communications as evidence amounting to a confession. Novak disputed that interpretation, arguing the materials merely reflect statements allegedly made by Robinson rather than admissions of guilt.
State investigator Brian Davis also testified that Robinson turned himself in after a family member suspected him of involvement. Davis also confirmed that Robinson's former roommate, Lance Twiggs, was interviewed under a use-immunity agreement.

During the hearing, prosecutors also presented limited footage showing Robinson after he was taken into custody.
Earlier in the week, additional surveillance and video evidence from the day of the shooting was shown only to Judge Graf and was not released publicly. Reports from the courtroom indicated that the judge visibly reacted while reviewing portions of that footage.
Robinson is accused of fatally shooting Kirk during a Turning Point USA rally at Utah Valley University in September 2025.
The preliminary hearing, scheduled to conclude on Friday, July 10, will determine whether prosecutors have established enough evidence for the case to move forward to trial.
