Cher hints she had an 'abortion' shortly after getting married to Gregg Allman in new self-titled memoir
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Cher—who has long advocated for women's autonomy—has hinted in her new memoir that she had an abortion a few days after getting married to her second husband, Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers.
Cher discussed her miscarriages, relationships with her children, issues with her ex-husbands Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman, and more in her recently-released self-titled memoir, 'Cher.'
She also addressed the decision she made after meeting with her doctor immediately after getting married to Gregg at an impromptu wedding in Vegas.
Cher hints at getting an abortion shortly after her marriage to Gregg Allman
The 78-year-old pop star revealed details about her romantic past in the recently-released first volume of her two-part autobiography, 'Cher: The Memoir.' Gregg and Cher experienced frequent upheavals during their 1975–1979 marriage due to his heroin addiction.
Cher got married to Gregg in a Las Vegas ceremony "arranged within a few days" of her finding out she was pregnant and that she married him in the spur of the moment.
Cher had previously assisted Gregg in getting sober, but the morning after the wedding, she found a "plastic bag full of white powder" in his personal belongings.
"I had to make a choice, and I knew what it was," she wrote without using the word "abortion" directly after her husband's relapsed drug use and her own concerns about the impact of her pregnancy on her career, according to Daily Mail.
Cher then talked about seeing her doctor who had "become friends" with her after treating the singer through two miscarriages and the birth of her first child, Chaz Bono whom she had with her first husband Sonny Bono.
"While examining me, he discovered I Had some ovarian cysts and told me: 'I can go ahead and take care of these.' I'd known him for so long, if they'd been dangerous he would have said: 'You have cysts. I have to take them out.' I pretty much knew what he meant when he offered it as a choice," Cher wrote.
Cher went on to mention all of the obligations in her life that were weighing her down as well as the fact that she had to stay in bed for four months during her previous pregnancy. "I needed to be singing and dancing," she wrote.
"I had a child, mother and sister to take care of. I knew I had to make a choice, and I knew what it was. It made it harder that I didn't have Gregory to talk to about it, but I made my decision and I was so grateful to my doctor's compassion for giving me one," the 'Believe' singer explained.
Gregg and Cher eventually welcomed their son, Elijah Blue Allman, in July 1976, one year and two months after their wedding. However, despite Gregg's repeated attempts to quit heroin, his addiction caused their relationship to end.

Cher addresses highs and lows of her relationship with ex-husband Gregg Allman
In her new memoir, Cher further opened up about the highs and lows of her relationship with Gregg Allman and why their marriage initially lasted for only nine days.
"I didn’t know whether my relationship with Gregory would last or not. I was living each day as it came. Then I found out I was pregnant, and we decided to get married," she wrote in 'Cher: The Memoir — Part One.'
She informed two of her friends, and they accompanied her to Las Vegas for the "over in minutes" ceremony. They took pictures together before flying "straight back home" with Gregg who died in 2017 at the age of 69, noted Us Weekly.
Cher wrote, "I was no longer Cher Bono but Cher Allman, Gregory’s third wife. There was little about our wedding day that was romantic. There would be no honeymoon."
Even though Cher supported Gregg during his battle with addiction, discovering the drug after the wedding was a turning point for her because she was expecting their first child together.
Cher was informed by several friends that Gregg intended to file for divorce after she went to the doctor for a checkup. The 'Believe' singer said Gregg "lied and denied it" when she confronted him about it. However, she filed for divorce the next day.
Gregg later entered a rehab facility and Cher turned to Bono as the two former partners remained friends after their separation.
After the pivotal therapy moment, the couple got back together and ultimately took a "belated honeymoon" to Jamaica.
