Madai ChaKell's Hollywood Night performance brought high drama to 'American Idol'
ChaKell brought the show to a standstill while trying to perform Ariana Grande's 'Tattooed Heart' for the panel of judges, consisting of Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie. Emotions were already heightened due to Bryan's previous rejection of ChaKell during her initial audition.
As she passionately sang the 2013 hit, ChaKell suddenly paused and turned around to confront the pianist. "Hold on, hey, can we start that over? I wasn't feeling that one. Sorry y'all," she demanded.
Restarting her performance, ChaKell's voice appeared to crack, prompting her to firmly state, "Okay, we're going to do this acapella because that's not flowing the way we practiced." Without even glancing at the pianist, she flung out her arm, dismissing the accompanying track.
After her solo acapella rendition, ChaKell faced critique from Bryan, who observed that her "voice was shaky in spots" before asking, "Is your voice okay?" ChaKell confessed her voice was "not to where I would like it" but took offense backstage.
"My pianist just completely flipped the script on what we had practiced," she complained. Addressing Bryan's comment, ChaKell retorted, "Then they tried to also play the card, 'Is your voice okay?' What do you think? I was shaky and all [gargling noises] because look what y'all just did. Is your voice okay, Luke? I haven't heard you sing. Obviously I can sing."
