WASHINGTON, DC: Timothy Mellon, a billionaire heir to a Gilded Age fortune, recently made an extraordinary donation of $50 million to a super PAC backing former President Donald Trump, as per TIME Magazine.

This generous contribution took place shortly after Trump was convicted of 34 felonies in the hush money trial, according to federal filings. Mellon's donation is one of the largest single disclosed contributions in US political history.

Mellon's $50 million donation is expected to dramatically influence the dynamics of the 2024 race. The pro-Trump super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc, announced plans to reserve $100 million in advertising through Labor Day, leveraging Mellon's substantial contribution.

Before this windfall, the PAC had only $34.5 million at the end of April. Mellon's donation constitutes the bulk of the nearly $70 million raised in May. Immediately after receiving the funds, the PAC began reserving $30 million in advertisements set to air in Georgia and Pennsylvania around the Fourth of July holiday.

Mellon's contribution makes him the first donor to give $100 million in disclosed federal contributions in the current election cycle.

He has previously donated $25 million each to super PACs supporting both Trump and Robert F Kennedy Jr, who is running as an independent. Democrats have highlighted Mellon's dual support as evidence of Kennedy being a potential spoiler, but Mellon's ultimate loyalties remain unclear.

The influx of funds from Mellon and other mega-donors is anticipated to reshape the financial landscape of the 2024 presidential campaign. Mellon's $50 million gift helps the pro-Trump camp close the financial gap with President Joe Biden and his supporters, who have so far enjoyed a considerable financial advantage.

Miriam Adelson, the widow of casino magnate Sheldon G Adelson, plans to contribute at least as much as the $90 million her family donated in the 2020 campaign, although much of this money has yet to materialize.

In addition to Mellon, other prominent Republican donors have bolstered Trump's campaign. Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein, a wealthy couple from Illinois, each contributed $5 million to the Trump super PAC in May. Kelcy Warren, a billionaire energy executive, also gave $5 million.

On the Democrats' side, groups supporting Biden have already announced plans for over $1 billion in spending, including $250 million in reserved advertising by the leading pro-Biden super PAC, Future Forward.
