WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by vowing to "bring peace" after a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as per The Hill.

The conversation, marking their first interaction since Trump left the White House, followed Trump’s acceptance of the Republican Party’s nomination for the upcoming presidential election.

The timing of the call also comes amid growing concerns in Europe regarding Trump's potential policies towards the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict if he were to reclaim the presidency in November.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump shared details of the conversation, stating, "President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and I had a very good phone call earlier today. He congratulated me on a very successful Republican National Convention and becoming the Republican nominee for President of the United States."

"He condemned the heinous assassination attempt last Saturday and remarked about the American people coming together in the spirit of Unity during these times," he added.

Trump went on to emphasize his vision for global peace, asserting, "I appreciate President Zelenskyy for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families. Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity."

Zelensky also took to social media, specifically X, to elaborate on the conversation. He echoed Trump's statements about the congratulatory tone of their discussion and the condemnation of the assassination attempt. "I wished him strength and absolute safety in the future," Zelensky wrote.

Zelensky concluded his post by noting, "We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting."

The backdrop to this conversation is Trump's repeated claims that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict within a day, although specifics on how he would achieve such peace remain vague.

During a CNN presidential debate last month, Trump rejected the idea of accepting Putin’s terms, which would involve Ukraine ceding territories currently occupied by Russia.
