WASHINGTON, DC: Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum spoke highly of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News. Speaking at the red‑carpet world premiere of the new 'Melania' documentary, he shared both personal impressions of the couple and his perspective on Trump’s policy agenda.

The documentary premiered at the Kennedy Center on Thursday, January 29, with additional screenings for friends and supporters of Trump held in 20 cities. The following day, Amazon MGM Studios released the film in 2,000 theaters across the US and in 5,000 theaters worldwide.

Doug Burgum on Trump and Melania's powerful partnership

In the interview, Burgum described Trump and Melania as the “ultimate power couple,” emphasizing his admiration for their combined presence and accomplishments. He recounted a personal moment from early in the Trumps’ tenure when he and his wife, Catherine, were invited to the White House shortly after Trump’s 2016 election victory.

He said that seating arrangements allowed him to sit next to Melania while Catherine sat beside Trump, leading him to observe the couple’s strong dynamic firsthand. According to Burgum, Melania’s intelligence, poise, and ability to speak multiple languages contributed to what he characterized as a “mystical” and “exceptional” partnership.

Addressing the negative coverage of the film, Burgum noted, “Everybody’s a critic about this president and his life. So it’s no surprise that when a movie comes out, everybody’s going to be a movie critic.”

The secretary also encouraged the American public to view the documentary: “I would encourage people to see the movie, and, as I understand, it’s a great behind-the-scenes look at someone, a First Lady with incredible humility, poise, intelligence, and a great representative for our country.”

During the screening, Trump expressed admiration, saying, “I think she has really been a great help. She has done a great job — very respected, very smart, very measured — sometimes when I am not so measured.”

The documentary also highlights Melania’s personal reflections, as she speaks of the “quiet strength” of her late mother, Amalija Knavs, and commends the “intelligent mind” of the couple’s 19-year-old son, Barron.

Doug Burgum’s broader remarks on Donald Trump’s policy agenda

Burgum also commented on the cabinet meeting held earlier in the day, which marked the tenth of Trump’s second term and surpassed the total number held during former President Joe Biden’s presidency.

He stated, “President Trump, when he ran on a platform of, ‘Hey, we’re going to have energy abundance. We’re going to have energy dominance. We’re going to be able to sell energy to our friends and allies so they don’t have to buy it from our adversaries.'"

Burgum further claimed, "And when we do that, it helps stop wars abroad. It helps bring peace to the world. That helps bring prices down here at home.”

He continued, "Because energy is part of the food you eat. There’s an energy cost in the food you eat, the clothes you wear, the car you drive, the heat in your home. Like this week with the storm. Lower energy prices mean lower prices for everything."

He also emphasized that Trump’s approach to energy links directly to both national security and the strength of the US economy, “President Trump understands you can’t separate energy from national security. You can’t separate it from our economy. His energy diplomacy is going to go down in history."

He pointed specifically to recent actions involving Venezuela, stating, “He’s making it happen. Venezuela, with that move, we’re moving the geopolitical center — which has always been controlled by oil from the Middle East — back to the Western Hemisphere.”

Burgum concluded his remarks by calling the president's strategy a “brilliant move on his part."
