LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The 2025 California wildfires have ignited a flurry of rumors online, with one particularly circulating claim that Denzel Washington donated $50 million to the victims.

While celebrities like Beyonce, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle have publicly stepped up with donations, the internet has been buzzing with speculation about Washington’s involvement.

The devastating fire, which began on January 7, ravaged vast areas, destroying homes, including multi-million-dollar properties. But did Washington really make such a generous contribution? Let’s separate fact from fiction and find out.

What is the claim involving Denzel Washington?

A rumor circulating since January 15 on the X handle @Rio_To_Mars claimed that the 'Inside Man' actor Denzel Washington had donated $50 million to support the victims of the California wildfires.

The post read, "Denzel Washington donates $50 million to support victims of the Hollywood fire," and added, "I'm heartbroken and will personally help those who are still homeless. Everyone please stay calm, I will... Bravo!"

The post led some to believe the claim, with one user commenting, "Denzel Washington donated $50 million. I read that on a social media site, and I believe it."

The rumor was also accompanied by an article that read, "GOOD NEWS: Denzel Washington announces he will donate $50 million to the Hollywood fire: I am heartbroken by the destruction I’ve seen in my beloved Hollywood. I know these are trying times, but I want to assure you all that I will personally be there for those still without homes. Everyone, stay calm—I’m here to help."

The article also shared, "In addition to his donation, Washington has pledged to work directly with local charities, organizations, and volunteers to ensure that the recovery efforts remain focused and efficient. ‘It’s not just about the money; it’s about getting people back on their feet. We will work with local communities to rebuild what’s been lost. It’s about hope, it’s about survival, and it’s about making sure no one is left behind,’ he added.”

After investigating the claim involving Denzel Washington's donation, it was confirmed to be false.

A representative for the actor clarified the claim was false, as reported by Snopes. First, there was no credible media coverage of Washington's alleged donation, unlike other celebrities who have publicly shared evidence of their contributions.

Additionally, the article featuring Washington's supposed quote was found to be identical to passages found on other websites, such as USA Toss and USA Boomin, which are known to generate content using AI software, rather than featuring Washington's actual words. These findings have effectively debunked the ongoing rumor.

This incident follows a similar situation with pop icon Taylor Swift, who was also falsely reported to have donated $10 million to support relief efforts for the California wildfire, a claim that was later disproven.
