Fact Check: Did Patrick Mahomes donate $4.7M to charities and 'homeless relief'?

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI: Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is known for making donations in the past. In 2024, he donated $5 million to his alma mater, Texas Tech, for the $242 million South End Zone and Dustin R Womble Football Center project.

Recently, a post online claimed that Patrick Mahomes donated $4.7 million from his bonus and endorsement deal earnings to charities and "homeless relief." But is there any truth to this? Let us find out.

Claim: Patrick Mahomes donated $4.7M bonus to charities and 'homeless relief'

In April 2025, an online post claimed that Patrick Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP), donated his $4.7 million bonus and endorsement deal earnings to charities and "homeless relief."

A Facebook group named Kansas City Chiefs Fans posted on April 14, "BREAKING: Patrick Mahomes donated his entire $4.7 million bonus and endorsement deal to charities and homeless relief."

The post continued, "In a stunning act of generosity, NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes has made headlines for donating his entire $4.7 million signing bonus and endorsement earnings to a variety of charities and homeless relief efforts."



 

So far, the Facebook post has received more than 100K reactions and more than 6000 comments.

A Facebook user shared the rumor and wrote, "His actions speak a lot more than words. May he be blessed as well as the charities to receive his gift."

Fact Check: False, no proper evidence that Patrick Mahomes donated $4.7M to charities

The claim made in the social media posts is false, as there is no proper evidence to back the claim that Patrick Mahomes donated his $4.7 million bonus to charities and "homeless relief," according to Snopes.

Moreover, searches on several search engines showed no credible reporting about the matter from news outlets, per the fact-checking outlet.

Interestingly, the online claim is the latest in a trend of false rumors claiming prominent athletes donated large sums of money to charities.

During the same time when the Mahomes rumor spread, internet users shared a false claim alleging that the 2025 Masters champion Rory McIlroy donated his $4.2 million in earnings from the win to a UK charity, as per Snopes.

Proof: Facebook post contains AI-generated image

The post on the Kansas City Chiefs Fans Facebook group showed three photos in a single image. The largest picture (on the left) showed signs of artificial intelligence (AI) manipulation, according to the fact-checking outlet.

The photo, which depicts Mahomes signing a check upside down, had letters that did not form real words, both on the check and in the background.

Moreover, the 'KC' logo on Mahomes' chest did not appear to be clear.

Furthermore, the Facebook group that made the post had several administrators and moderators showing signs of inauthenticity, per the fact-checking outlet.

Patrick Mahomes donates $5M to Texas Tech

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes donated $5 million to the quarterback's alma mater, Texas Tech, toward the $242 million South End Zone and Dustin R Womble Football Center project in August 2024, according to People.

Texas Tech announced that a walkthrough area in the Womble Football Center will be named after the athlete to thank the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback for his generous gift.

Moreover, Mahomes will also become the namesake of the university's quarterback meeting room and the coordinator's office in the new South End Zone Building at Jones AT&T Stadium, per Texas Tech.
