ATLANTA, GEORGIA: In a game-changing decision, the Court of Appeals of the State of Georgia has ordered an indefinite stay on the election interference case against Donald Trump.

This comes as the court reviews the former president's efforts to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the case. The appeals court’s ruling also affects eight of Trump’s co-defendants, delaying proceedings in the highly publicized case.

What led to the stay in Donald Trump's Georgia election interference case

The brief order issued by the Georgia Court of Appeals mandates that Willis’ cases against Trump and his co-defendants in Fulton County Superior Court be "stayed pending the outcome" of their appeals.

This ruling impacts Trump, his former campaign official Michael Roman, former Georgia GOP Chairman David Shafer, lawyer Robert Cheeley, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former Coffee County GOP Chairwoman Cathleen Latham, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark, and former Black Voices for Trump Director Harrison Floyd.

However, it remains unclear if the stay applies to the six defendants who did not join the motion to disqualify Willis, as per the New York Post.

Trump’s attorney, Steve Sadow, expressed approval of the court's decision through a statement.

He stated, "The Georgia Court of Appeals has properly stayed all proceedings against President Trump in the trial court pending its decision on our interlocutory appeal which argues the case should be dismissed and Fulton County DA Willis should be disqualified for her misconduct."

The appeal centers on accusations of prosecutorial misconduct against DA Willis. Trump and his co-defendants claim that Willis' past relationship with former special prosecutor Nathan Wade created a conflict of interest.

They also argue that Willis misused public funds by benefiting from Wade’s earnings, which were used to finance lavish vacations.

Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee had previously ruled that Willis could remain on the case if Wade stepped down, which he did. Despite this, Trump’s legal team is seeking to overturn McAfee’s decision before the trial proceeds.

The Georgia Court of Appeals has tentatively scheduled arguments for the effort to remove Willis for October 4.

This ruling is expected to cause further delays in the Fulton County case. Originally, the trial was set to begin in August, but the revelations about Willis' relationship with Wade and subsequent legal challenges have pushed this timeline back.

Trump faces 13 felony counts for allegedly conspiring to overturn Georgia's 2020 presidential election results and he has pleaded not guilty on all charges.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, June 5, the White House hopeful dismissed concerns about his legal team's performance, despite his recent conviction in the New York hush money case.

Trump said, "No, it’s a rigged system and it’s a terrible system actually." He remained optimistic about his legal situation in Georgia, stating, "I think we’re doing very well. We had a big thing happen in Georgia today."

The presumptive GOP nominee's legal challenges are not confined to Georgia. In his classified documents case in Florida, Judge Aileen Cannon has shown a willingness to entertain Trump's requests to question investigators and challenge prosecutors' authority.

Like the Georgia case, the Florida documents case also lacks a set trial date, as per CNN.
