WASHINGTON, DC: Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney called out presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis over his remarks on January 6 defendants, as reported by Mediaite.

In a conversation with Margaret Brennan for CBS' 'Face the Nation' on Sunday, January 7, the Wyoming lawmaker stated the Florida Governor was "unfit for office".

"The notion that the Republican Party would continue its efforts to whitewash that day, when the peaceful transition of power is at the core of the survival of our republic," she paused during her response and explicitly stated about DeSantis, "tells you that they're unfit for office".

According to a recent report by The Hill, the White House hopeful had stated the January 6 rioters were not patriots. He added that it "was not a good day for the country".

Trailing behind former President Donald Trump, DeSantis is in a neck-to-neck competition with Nikki Haley for the second position in opinion polls ahead of the January 15 Iowa caucus.

Liz Cheney urges voters to be careful on candidates' January 6 stance

Pointing out Republican candidates, including DeSantis' willingness to review the cases against the January 6 defendants and consider pardoning them if elected to the White House, Cheney urged the people to be careful about whom they vote for.

"I think that it's a very important piece that people ought to consider when they're thinking about for whom they're going to vote. Someone who says that they would pardon individuals who assaulted the Capitol, who attempted to stop a constitutional process, who assaulted police officers – I mean, it was a bloody battle," the former lawmaker said.

The Trump critic also recounted police officers explaining the Capitol insurrection as "medieval hand-to-hand combat".

During the interview, Cheney slammed Trump and Rep Elis Stefanik for labeling the imprisoned January 6 rioters as "hostages".

"That word she used is exactly the word that Donald Trump uses. And that's why she's using it. And it's outrageous, and it's disgusting," Cheney said.

"These are people who were involved in violence against police officers in the assault on the Capitol, and … it's disgraceful for Donald Trump to be saying what he's saying."

The former Congresswoman was referring to the infamous demand of the GOP frontrunner asking President Joe Biden to release the imprisoned January 6 rioters, labeling them "hostages".
