Trump unveils Qatar-gifted new Air Force One, says it's a 'level of luxury nobody's ever seen'
Trump arrives for historic Air Force One unveiling
President Trump arrived at Joint Base Andrews to unveil the next generation of Air Force One before a crowd of military personnel, administration officials and invited guests. The ceremony marked the first public appearance of the modified Boeing 747-8, which will eventually replace the aircraft that has transported American presidents since the early 1990s. Trump has previously said it would be 'stupid' to reject the gift, while also raising concern by saying the plane would eventually be donated to his presidential library.
Farewell to a presidential icon
The unveiling also marks the beginning of the transition from the Boeing VC-25 aircraft, which has served multiple US presidents for more than 30 years. Two of these iconic blue-and-white planes (tail numbers 28000 and 29000) have been in service since 1990 and function as flying command centers. Presidents have sometimes invited world leaders to fly with them on the old Air Force One. In 1973, President Richard Nixon invited Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev to fly with him from Washington, DC, to California. In 1983, the aircraft toured the US West Coast with President Ronald Reagan and Queen Elizabeth II.
A giant on the tarmac
The massive Boeing 747-8 dominates the runway as cameras captured the aircraft from every angle. Originally gifted by Qatar, the jet has been extensively modified to meet presidential security, communications and operational requirements. Trump described it as 'the world's most luxurious plane' and said it reflects America's stature on the world stage while ushering in a new era of presidential travel.
Trump leaves his mark on the new fleet
Trump marked the unveiling of the new aircraft by signing a mechanical panel aboard the jet, alongside crew members who spent more than 10 months restoring it. During the ceremony, he praised US Air Force personnel for their work on the aircraft, saying its pilots, designers and engineers had helped create what he described as the largest Air Force One ever built. Trump added that the jet can fly farther and faster than any previous presidential aircraft and called it “among the most beautiful aircrafts the Air Force will ever see or operate.”
Inside the 'Flying White House'
Trump toured the aircraft's interior, inspecting its conference rooms, workspaces, seating areas and other upgraded facilities. The aircraft features leather seats, plush carpets, wooden paneling and patriotic decor. The redesigned aircraft combines luxury and functionality. Once it enters regular service, the jet is expected to carry the president on domestic trips, international summits and diplomatic missions around the world.
A patriotic makeover
One of the most noticeable visual changes is the aircraft's striking red, white and blue paint scheme. Replacing the iconic light-blue design that has defined Air Force One for decades, the new exterior reflects a concept Trump first proposed during his previous presidency. Close-up images show the bold livery extending across the aircraft's fuselage, tail and engines.
Trump hails ‘extraordinary’ transformation
Standing beneath the aircraft, Trump praised the new Air Force One as a symbol of American strength and innovation. 'It's time,' he told the audience, arguing that the aging presidential fleet deserved a modern replacement. 'This is considered the world's most luxurious plane,' Trump said during a speech inside the plane's hangar, commending Qatar for being 'so nice and providing' it. He praised the workmanship involved in modifying the jet, saying, 'With the extraordinary devotion of many of you here today, this plane was transformed into a flying White House at a level of luxury that nobody's ever seen before.'
Ready for the world stage
Trump said the new Air Force One will be a centerpiece of America's 250th anniversary celebrations and future presidential travel. As the aircraft prepares to enter regular service, it is expected to carry the president on domestic trips, international summits, and diplomatic missions, making it one of the most recognizable symbols of the United States worldwide.
