CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Illinois Gov JB Pritzker has signed a broad package of legislation designed to protect immigrants from federal immigration enforcement actions. A move that follows months of intensified raids and confrontations across the Chicago region under the Trump administration.
The federal campaign resulted in thousands of arrests and repeated clashes between ICE agents, residents and local activists.
New laws expand privacy protections and legal avenues
The newly enacted measures bar hospitals, schools and child-care facilities from disclosing the immigration status of students and patients.
Another provision reportedly allows individuals to sue law enforcement officers for monetary damages if they violate state or federal constitutional rights during immigration operations.
Pritzker also finalized a previously passed bill prohibiting federal immigration actions from occurring at outdoor court hearings, a practice that had drawn condemnation from immigrant advocates.
JB Pritzker accuses Trump and Kristi Noem of cruelty
At a press conference, Pritzker, widely considered a potential 2028 presidential contender, said that the legislation was crafted to safeguard Illinois communities and to “send a message” to federal authorities driving the crackdown.
He accused President Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and US Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino of overseeing “a relentless campaign of cruelty and intimidation.”

“Everyday activities, dropping kids at school, going to the doctor, showing up at work have meant risking your safety,” he said. “Fear and intimidation have been visited upon us by fellow Americans. It’s unconstitutional.”
DHS accuses Illinois of harboring criminals
Following the bill signing, the Department of Homeland Security issued a sharp rebuke on X, accusing Pritzker of refusing to cooperate with ICE and claiming the policy allows “murderers, p****hiles, and drug t******kers to roam free.”
“DHS is calling on Illinois politicians to stop this dangerous derangement and hand over the remaining 4,000 criminal illegal aliens in their custody,” the agency wrote.
Trump criticizes JB Pritzker and Chicago's crime surge
President Donald Trump took aim at Chicago's Democratic leadership during a White House event, urging them to "invite us in" to help battle crime.
Speaking at the Rose Garden during the annual holiday ritual, Trump used the moment to criticize Chicago’s crime surge and the Democrats preventing him from addressing it.
“We’re ready to go,” he declared, insisting that Illinois Gov JB Pritzker only needs to “invite us in.” Trump said federal teams have already been “moving toward Chicago,” but claimed that local leadership was standing in the way.
🚨 LMAO! President Trump: “I'm not going to tell my Pritzker joke. A very cute little joke, you know.”

I REFUSE to talk about the fact that he's a FAT SLOB. I don't mention it!” 🤣 pic.twitter.com/KGtOQh3vAP
In a moment that stunned the press, Trump then turned his ire toward the state's Democratic governor.
"I refuse to talk about the fact he is a fat slob," Trump declared, utilizing a rhetorical to say exactly what he claimed he wouldn't.
