Internet outraged as former consultant for Dean Phillips' campaign admits to role in fake Biden robocall
WASHINGTON, DC: A political consultant for Democratic presidential contender Dean Phillips admitted he was behind the fake robocall to impersonate President Joe Biden, reported Daily Mail.
On Sunday, February 26, veteran political consultant Steve Kramer acknowledged that he commissioned Biden's AI-generated voice urging New Hampshire voters not to take part in the state's primary on January 23.
"The evening of Sunday, January 20th, 2 days before the New Hampshire primary, I sent out an automated call to 5,000 most likely to vote Democrats. Using easy to use online technology, an automated version of President Joe Biden voice was created," Kramer said in a statement as per CNN.
In an interview with NBC News, he added, "I'm not afraid to testify, I know why I did everything. If a House oversight committee wants me to testify, I'm going to demand they put it on TV because I know more than them."

He confessed to his involvement following revelations by Paul Carpenter, a New Orleans street magician. Carpenter disclosed that a Democratic political consultant paid him $150 to produce a deepfake of Biden's voice for a robocall, advising supporters not to vote in the New Hampshire primary.
The robocall was the first of its kind attempt to imitate a US President to quash votes, which was sent to more than 20000 voters ahead of the New Hampshire primary.
Steve Kramer claims his motive was to highlight dangers of AI
Speaking to NBC News, Kramer claimed that his motive behind the fake robocall was an act of civil disobedience to make everyone aware of the danger artificial intelligence poses to politics. Comparing himself to the nation's revolutionary heroes Paul Revere and Thomas Paine, he urged for more enforcement to put a check on actions like these.
"This is a way for me to make a difference, and I have. For $500, I got about $5 million worth of action, whether that be media attention or regulatory action," he said.
Kramer further added that the fake robocall was his sole idea, and Biden's opponent, Phillips, had no involvement.
The Minnesota lawmaker, trailing far behind Biden in the presidential run, condemned the call, stating they were unaware of the consultant's involvement and would have fired him immediately if they had known.
Kramer also confirmed that he hired Texas telemarketing company Life Co. to distribute the calls.
New Hampshire officials are investigating the robocall for potential violation of state laws against voter suppression. Furthermore, The Biden robocall prompted the Federal Communications Commission to hasten plans to ban AI robocalls.

"This should be treated as a serious offense. Jail time. Such shenanigans could change the outcome of an election. By the way, I'm not buying Talenti ice cream/gelato ever again. Dean Phillips is wealthy and bored, let him find a new hobby," an individual asserted.
