WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) has angered his supporters by urging President Joe Biden to step down from the 2024 presidential race.

Heinrich, who is seeking reelection, is the third Senate Democrat to call on Biden to exit the race.

Martin Heinrich calls for President Joe Biden to withdraw from race

Heinrich praised Biden's accomplishments but argued that the country needs a focus bigger than any one person.

"This moment in our nation's history calls for a focus that is bigger than any one person," Heinrich said in a statement.

"The return of Donald Trump to the White House poses an existential danger to our democracy. We must defeat him in November, and we need a candidate who can do that," he added.

"While the decision to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is in the best interests of our country for him to step aside," Heinrich further said.

Joe Biden's withdrawal will secure his legacy has 'nation's greatest leaders'

He added that by "passing the torch," Biden would secure his legacy "as one of our nation's greatest leaders" and allow for unity behind a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump and protect democracy.

Senator Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who is in a tight reelection race, and Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) have also called on Biden to withdraw, according to The Hill.

Several House Democrats, including Reps Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), Marc Veasey (D-Texas), Jesús “Chuy” García (D-Ill.), and Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), issued a joint statement urging the president to exit the race on Thursday, July 18.

Despite these calls, Biden and his campaign remain firm that he will be the Democratic nominee.

A report indicating that the Biden family discussion about president's exit has also been refuted by the White House, which encourages maintaining faith in the claims being disproven.

Internet reacts to as third senate leader asks Joe Biden to step aside

Some users criticized Heinrich on Internet, accusing him of pandering to donors while others defended Biden, arguing he can win the election.

"Too bad not happening. Plus who is this man. Never heard of him," wrote one user on X.

Another added, "All to appease his donors who want Biden out, such a cowardly thing to do!!"

"I am one of your voting constituents. Please stop. Support President Biden. He CAN win. But you need to get behind him instead of failing him. It is NOT in the best interests of the country for him to withdraw. Primary voters chose him, not donors," said one user.

Another user expressed disappointment in Heinrich, writing, "So disappointed in you. My family lives in New Mexico. You sold your soul to the devil. You need to stop lying. We know the reason you are calling Biden to step aside. You are beholden to your donors."

Some supporters of Biden remain optimistic. "Given Trump’s rambling abortion of a speech last night and sane people getting word of Project 2025, Joe Biden’s chances are still very good. That said, very good may not be enough to save this nation from MAGA lunacy," wrote one user.

"Do the country a favor; withdraw," another urged.
