WASHINGTON, DC: In a dramatic turn of events on January 10, Hunter Biden, flanked by his lawyer Abbe Lowell and close associate Kevin Morris, made a surprise appearance at a House Oversight Committee hearing.

The unexpected move unfolded against the backdrop of an ongoing debate within the committee regarding a resolution contemplating holding Biden in contempt of Congress.

Hunter Biden's surprise appearance

The 53-year-old, under intense scrutiny for his foreign dealings and facing federal charges, ignited a firestorm by departing the hearing just 17 minutes after his entrance, accompanied by what seemed to be a documentary film crew capturing the chaotic scene.

Republican Representative Nancy Mace seized the moment, launching a scathing attack on Hunter Biden during her remarks at the hearing. Mace pulled no punches, describing Biden as the "epitome of white privilege."

“My first question is: Who bribed Hunter Biden to be here today?” Mace began. “You are the epitome of white privilege — coming into the Oversight Committee, spitting in our face, ignoring a congressional subpoena to be deposed. What are you afraid of? You have no balls.”

The South Carolina representative didn't mince words, asserting, "I think Hunter Biden should be arrested right here, right now, and go straight to jail."

Social media reactions

Social media was inundated with a barrage of reactions to Mace's comments. Some criticized the GOP firebrand.

"Speaking of a reason to censure a member. @RepNancyMace you have now jumped the shark," one posted on X.

"Translation: 'I’d like to be Trump’s Vice President and I’m willing to do what Pence wouldn’t,'” another quipped.

"That’s rich coming from her," a comment read.

Others applauded her for taking a bold stance.

"So good. Thank you, Nancy Mace. Nail meet head," one commented.

"Liberals seem to have a difficult time when their woke talking points are shoved back at them," another wrote.

"At least Nancy Mace has some Damn Balls !! Hunter needs to be in JAIL !!" someone else added.

Hunter Biden's evasive tactics

Hunter Biden's absence from a scheduled December 13 deposition raised eyebrows. He justified his decision by expressing a preference for public testimony in the ongoing impeachment inquiry into his father's role in foreign business ventures.

Subpoenas for Hunter's testimony were issued last year by both the Oversight and Judiciary committees, culminating in a party-line vote to refer a contempt resolution to the full House.

Hunter decided to leave the hearing when Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene began speaking. Greene labeled Hunter as a "coward," setting the stage for a heated exchange. Reporters and political operatives trailed Hunter through the hallways of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Amid the chaos, Hunter Biden faced questions about his father's involvement in his foreign dealings. When a reporter queried why he put Joe Biden on speakerphone during business meetings, Hunter responded with nonchalance, saying, "If he called you, would you answer the phone?"

Adding to the spectacle, a protester heckled Hunter as he exited the building, asking him, “Hunter, what’s your favorite kind of crack? Are you on crack today?”

Divergent perspectives

Democrats on the Oversight Committee defended Hunter, insisting that he was willing to speak but only in a public hearing. Representative Jasmine Crockett argued, "Let me tell you why nobody wants to talk to y'all behind closed doors. 'Cuz you all lie. That's just the bottom line."

The top Democrat on the committee, Representative Jamie Raskin, claimed that Republicans were targeting Hunter because they couldn't go after Joe Biden. “Why are we here? ‘Well, we can’t go after Joe Biden. He’s clean. Let’s go After Hunter Biden. Let’s go get him,'” he fumed.

Hunter Biden, facing federal charges for alleged tax fraud and illegal gun possession, would have the right to invoke the Fifth Amendment if called to testify.

Representative Mace remained unapologetic, accusing Hunter of compromising the integrity of the presidency and vice presidency through questionable business dealings.

“You’re playing with the truth,” she said Wednesday while lecturing the first son. “Hunter Biden wasn’t afraid to sell access to Joe Biden to the highest bidder when he was in elected office. He wasn’t afraid to trade on the Biden brand, peddle influence, and share those ill-gotten gains with members of his family, including Joe Biden."

“He wasn’t afraid to compromise the integrity of the presidency and vice presidency by involving Joe Biden in shady business deals with our foreign adversaries. But Hunter Biden, you were too afraid to show up for a deposition and you still can’t today," Mace continued, adding, “My last message to you, Hunter Biden: You play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.”
