Internet 'not surprised' as Hungary PM Viktor Orban says Trump will not give Ukraine 'penny' if reelected
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY: Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban said former president Donald Trump would not fund Ukraine in its fight against Russia, effectively ending the ongoing war if he is elected for a second term in November, reported CNN.
In an interview with Hungarian broadcaster M1 broadcast on Sunday, March 10, Orban said, "He [Trump] has a very clear vision."
"He says the following: first, he will not give a single penny for the Russia-Ukraine war. That's why the war will end, because it's obvious that Ukraine cannot stand on its own two feet," the prime minister added.
His remarks came after Trump hosted the Hungarian leader at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on March 8. According to sources, the ex-president, along with his close advisors, met with Orban for about an hour.
Video clips from the dinner party shared on the Hungarian PM's Instagram stories showed Trump praising the Hungarian Prime Minister as a "non-controversial figure." Furthermore, Orban has explicitly announced his support for Trump in his 2024 race.
Viktor Orban says Donald Trump's move will end the war
Orban, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasized how Donald Trump's plan to cut off financial assistance to Ukraine could end the war that started in February 2022.
"If the Americans don't give money and weapons, along with the Europeans, the war will end. And if the Americans don't give money, then the Europeans won't be able to fund this war alone. And then the war will end," he said.

Orban, since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has opposed the European Union and NATO's efforts to help the latter and has frequently hindered Western aid negotiations to Kyiv. However, after months of resistance, Hungary signed a €50 billion ($54.66 billion) financial aid package for Ukraine and approved Sweden's NATO accession.
In May 2023, during a CNN town hall, Trump also boasted, "If I'm president, I will have that war settled in one day, 24 hours." However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy found the claims "very dangerous," citing ambiguity regarding the post-war scenario, CNN reported.

Further, the White House hopeful, who has explicitly praised Putin on multiple occasions, is also against the US providing financial assistance to Ukraine's fight, and according to him, the money should be granted in the form of a loan.
Trump, who became the Republican presidential nominee after Nikki Haley's exit from the race, has kept an isolationist approach as he campaigns for a rematch with President Joe Biden in November.
