Internet rages as Trump's motion for mistrial rejected amid Stormy Daniels' explosive testimony
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Judge Juan Merchan denied granting Donald Trump a mistrial amidst the testimony of Stormy Daniels in the New York hush money trial on May 7. Defense attorney Todd Blanche approached the judge after the lunch break, claiming that the testimony of the adult film star was prejudicial, Fox News reports.
"I agree that it would have been better if some of these things had been left unsaid," responded Merchan. Though he maintained that mistrial was not warranted, Merchan claimed he was doing all he could to control the witness, including once objecting to the testimony himself.
Donald Trump's attorney pushes for mistrial as Stormy Daniels testifies in court
Defense attorney Blanche accused the prosecution of trying to rouse the jury with Daniels' testimony and evidence that he claims does not matter. Mentioning that the actress was trying to sell her story of an alleged consensual sexual encounter since 2016, Blanche stated that the testimony and evidence were prejudicial.
Tuesday's testimony was about "consent and danger" and that was "not the story that she was selling in 2016," he claimed. Testimony about consent was "impossible to come back from," and while the defense "objected as best we could, but she was able to say what she said."
"We believe there should be a mistrial, or that this witness’ testimony is excluded and extremely limited," stated Blanche, asserting that Daniels' testimony "has nothing to do with this case" and was "totally irrelevant."
However, prosecutor Susan Hoffinger hit back at the defense, stating that they were fully briefed on Stormy’s testimony in the motions before trial. She argued that it was probative to Trump's intent, and Blanche had "no basis" for attacking the witness.
Internet reacts to Donald Trump being denied motion for mistrial
The internet was not happy about Trump being denied a mistrial in the hush money case.
"The Prosecution and the Judge know exactly what they are doing. They’re letting Stormy say what she wants to get into the jury’s head all this information that shouldn’t be permissible despite their mild objections. Trump cannot get a fair trial no matter what," commented a reader.
One user said, "It's not surprising that the 'judge' let the prosecution get away with this. It's a kangaroo court! Merchan is helping Biden and the prosecutor take Trump out. At the very least, they want to inflict significant damage to Trump's campaign."
"Any appellate court reviewing this case will have a smorgasbord of grounds to pick from in reversing any resulting conviction. The judge himself admitted the testimony was problematic," shared another.
"This is an embarrassment to the rule of law in our country. They just want to smear Trump and even with a mistrial this will be mission accomplished by a coordinated political attack on a former President," slammed a third.
"The testimony should be disallowed due to the fact the is violating her non disclosure agreement. A clear mistrial due to prosecutorial misconduct," wrote a fourth.
"We used to sanction countries who used their judicial system to prosecute their political opponents. Wake up before it's too late," noted a fifth.
"The judge is on a political agenda not a judicial agenda. He will never stop this trial. The Supreme Court needs to step in and stop the illegal prosecution," mentioned a sixth reader.
