Internet says Trump’s ‘delay card has expired’ as court rejects request to postpone Carroll trial
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A New York City judge rejected Donald Trump's request to postpone his trial in the E. Jean Carroll case to attend his mother-in-law's funeral.
The GOP frontrunner's attorney, Alina Habba, sent a letter to Manhattan federal Judge Lewis Kaplan on Friday, January 12, to delay the trial by one week as he would like to attend the funeral of Amalija Knavs, the mother of former First Lady Melania Trump, who died on January 9. The trial is scheduled to commence on January 16.
"The application is DENIED," Judge Lewis Kaplan wrote in an order issued the same day.
Offering condolences, the federal judge added, "Mr Trump is free to attend the trial, the funeral, or all or parts of both, as he wishes."
According to the email sent to the judge, which liberal news network Meidas Touch published, the funeral is scheduled for January 18 in Florida.
Writer E. Jean Carroll filed a $10 million defamation trial against the GOP frontrunner over sexual abuse allegations. Trump has previously also requested a 90-day delay in the proceedings, which the court denied.
Donald Trump slams judge for denying trial delay
Trump lashed out at Judge Kaplan after being rejected the request to delay the trial to attend his mother-in-law's funeral, according to The Independent's report.
He took to his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday, January 13, calling the judge "a bad person and a worse judge" and blaming him for suffering from "Trump derangement syndrome".
Claiming he did not know Kaplan, the former President accused the Judge of being a part of an "Election Interference Witch Hunt."
He added the Judge was "asked if he could delay this Rigged Political Scam for one day so that I could attend the FUNERAL OF MY BELOVED MOTHER-IN-LAW WITH MY WIFE, THE FORMER (AND NEXT!) FIRST LADY OF THE UNITED STATES — AND HE SAID NO."
He further blasted the judge's decision, saying if anyone could imagine a husband not attending his wife's mother's funeral "over a MADE UP STORY."
Keeping the funeral apart, the former President, leading the Republican primary polls with a sizeable dominance, is expected to be in Iowa till January 15, the day of the caucus, despite the extreme weather conditions.
Anticipating a success in the Hawkeye state, Trump will likely face Biden in a rematch in November for a second term in the White House.
Internet reacts to Trump's delay request
Pointing out his presence was not mandatory in the trial, social media users slammed and ridiculed Trump for requesting to delay the trial by a week.
One user remarked, "His delay card has expired."
Another user moted, "He can campaign in Iowa. Throw parties at Mar-a-Lago. While his Mother-in-law was dying and now has passed, but his court cases need to be paused for weeks."

"TRUMP has been absent from probably 98% of his legal proceedings… but he needs a week delay to “console” the woman he won’t hold an umbrella for…. Just so transparent and laughable!" read a third reaction.
