Biden slammed for not being 'accurate' about Hunter laptop containing 'Russian plant' during Trump debate
WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden made a false claim during his 2020 presidential debate against former President Donald Trump when he said that a group of former intelligence operatives had concluded that files from his son Hunter Biden's discarded laptop were "garbage" and a "Russian plant."
The signatories of the ‘Spies Who Lie’ letter disclosed this information during testimony to Congress, which was made public just hours before the first presidential debate of 2024.

The former spies, who had written the letter specifically to provide the Democrat statesman with a "talking point" for the second and final debate of the 2020 campaign, clarified that they had only suggested that the files from Hunter's hard drive were fake, and had not stated it as a fact.
This revelation came days after the New York Post released explosive reports indicating that the elder Biden was involved in his family's business dealings in China and Ukraine.
Ex-CIA directors admit misleading claims in 'Spies Who Lie' letter
Former CIA Director John Brennan, a prominent signer of the ‘Spies Who Lie’ letter stated, “When he said that it is a Russian plant or whatever — garbage — that’s not what we said in there."
Brennan added during a deposition before the House Judiciary Committee on May 11, 2023, "What he said was not an accurate reflection of what the statement said."
When asked if Joe Biden's debate assertion was "accurate," James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence, replied, "Not exactly."

Clapper stated during a deposition on May 17, 2023, "If he had said ‘could have’ or ‘may have,’ that would comport with what the intent, as I felt it was, of the public statement, not a definitive statement [that] this was Russian interference."
The controversial letter, which alleged that the laptop files bore “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation,” was orchestrated by former CIA acting director Michael Morell.
In an email obtained by House investigators, Morell stated, “We think Trump will attack Biden on the issue at this week’s debate, and we want to give the Vice President, VP, a talking point to use in response.”
“I wanted [Biden] to win the election,” Morell affirmed during his own deposition on April 4, 2023.
What exactly did Joe Biden claim during his 2020 presidential debate against Trump?
Joe Biden stated during the October 22, 2020 debate in Nashville that voters should be cautious of media coverage regarding documents from Hunter's laptop.
These documents allegedly showed then-Vice President Joe Biden’s 2015 meeting with an executive from Ukrainian gas company Burisma Holdings, which paid Hunter Biden up to $1 million per year despite his lack of relevant industry experience.

It was also alleged that then-VP Biden, referred to as the "big guy," was once expected to receive a 10% share of a proposed joint venture with the Chinese state-linked company CEFC China Energy in 2017.
“There are 50 former national intelligence folks who said that what he’s accusing me of is a Russian plant,” Biden asserted onstage that night. “Five former heads of the CIA, both parties, say what he’s saying is a bunch of garbage. Nobody believes it except [Trump’s] good friend Rudy Giuliani.”
The CIA recently informed the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees that Michael Morell and some of the other letter signers were under active contracts with the agency at the time.

This raised concerns about their ability to verify the authenticity of the laptop, which the FBI had already confirmed to be Hunter's, and sparked fears surrounding federal agencies being politically influenced.
This week, Morell denied having an active contract with the CIA when he drafted the letter.
President Biden has maintained that he “never” discussed foreign ventures with his family members.
In March, he told the aforementioned outlet that he “did not interact with their partners”, despite evidence to the contrary, including photos, emails, and witness testimony.

President Biden indeed interacted with associates of his son and brother, James Biden, who were involved in two Chinese government-linked business ventures, as well as contacts in Kazakhstan, Mexico, Russia, and Ukraine.
This information comes from news reports and records provided by the House impeachment inquiry into alleged Biden family corruption.
The contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop have been widely corroborated, and federal prosecutors used the device to secure a conviction against Hunter, 54, this month for felony gun crimes.
Hunter also faces a second trial in Los Angeles for allegedly failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019 on income from foreign ventures involving his father.
