PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: If anyone knows how to stir the pot during the holidays, it’s JD Vance. But his latest attempt at memeing may have backfired on him.

The Republican vice president-elect and Ohio senator found himself being widely mocked after posting a Thanksgiving meme that had people talking—and laughing—on social media.

JD Vance shoots himself in the foot with Thanksgiving meme

On Thanksgiving Day, JD Vance took to X (formerly Twitter) to wish everyone a happy holiday. “Thanksgiving everyone! Despite our challenges, we remain the greatest nation in the world, and I’m very grateful for it—and for all of you!” he wrote.

A few hours later, Vance dropped a meme with zero caption. The image was a spin on Norman Rockwell’s iconic Thanksgiving painting, except with a twist: Vance playing the doting wife to Donald Trump.

Critics of Vance on social media pounced at the opportunity to troll him.

Progressive commentator Mehdi Hasan posted on X, “JD Vance posting an image of himself as Trump’s wife, and also with a map that doesn’t show people he and Trump won by one of the lowest margins in American history.”

Comedian Gabe Sanchez joined the roast session: “JD Vance posted this. He chose to be Trump’s wife lol.”

And that was just the beginning. Social media critics piled on:

“Even after the election, Vance seeks creative ways to keep proving Tim Walz right: they’re f*****g weird,” one wrote.

“Just when we all thought it couldn’t get any weirder!” said another.

“I can absolutely see JD Vance wearing that dress,” someone else joked.

“JD Vance rejecting gender roles to be Trump’s wife, progressive af,” quipped another.

JD Vance steps into his new role

Beyond the meme-worthy antics, JD Vance has been busy behind the scenes prepping for his big new job as Trump’s second-in-command. After keeping a low profile since his brief, 46-second victory speech on election night, Vance recently emerged to tackle one of his most important tasks: acting as Trump’s go-to guy on Capitol Hill.

According to sources, Trump has tasked Vance with smoothing the path for his policy agenda and securing support for some of his more controversial Cabinet picks. This includes helping nominees like former Florida Rep Matt Gaetz, Trump’s pick for attorney general, and ex-Fox News host Pete Hegseth, tapped for the Department of Defense.

Last Wednesday, Vance brought Gaetz to Capitol Hill to meet with key senators who’ll be crucial in the confirmation process. The next day, he did the same for Hegseth.

The new role is an early test of Vance’s political clout, especially since he’s only been in the Senate for two years. Securing confirmation for Trump’s picks—particularly the more controversial ones—will be a major litmus test for how much pull the VP-elect has in Washington.

Some Republicans believe Vance’s influence could be limited, given his relatively short tenure on the Hill. “He doesn’t have long relationships. But we all like people who have done what we’ve done. There’s sort of a natural kinship, just not as long,” explained North Dakota Sen Kevin Cramer.

That said, others noted that Trump himself remains the most direct line of communication for many in the GOP. “When I call the White House, if I left a message for five people who work there, the one most likely to call me back—and the one that will do it first—is Donald Trump,” Cramer said.

Still, he had high hopes for the Trump-Vance duo. “As a team, they will be very good. And they will divide and conquer," he added, as quoted by CNN.

Vance wasted no time setting the tone for his return to Capitol Hill, sending a strong message to his Republican colleagues. “Donald J Trump just won a major electoral victory. His coattails turned a 49-51 Senate to a 53-47 Senate,” Vance wrote on X. “He deserves a cabinet that is loyal to the agenda he was elected to implement.”
