Jim Carrey says he did 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' because he 'needs the money' but fans aren't convinced
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a surprising twist, Jim Carrey has revealed that he's returning to the big screen for 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3', which will mark his re-entry into Hollywood after he announced his retirement two years ago in 2022.
The 62-year-old, who plays the villainous mad scientist Dr Robotnik in the franchise, had previously made it clear that 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' would be his last movie, claiming that he "had enough" and "done enough" in the entertainment industry.
Jim Carrey gets real about his Hollywood comeback
While fans were initially puzzled by the return, Jim Carrey himself was candid about his reasons during a recent conversation with the Associated Press, as per The Independent.

When asked about his previous comment that he would only come back to the silver screen if the script was "written in gold ink by angels," Carrey chuckled and offered a playful response.
"That might’ve been hyperbole, yeah," he said, adding, "I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly."
For decades, he has been one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars, known for his over-the-top comedic performances in classics like 'Dumb and Dumber', 'The Mask', 'Bruce Almighty', and 'Liar Liar'.
His ability to make audiences laugh while also showcasing his dramatic chops in films like 'The Truman Show' and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' earned him critical acclaim and a number of award nominations.
Jim Carrey said he was fairly serious about retiring after 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2'
In an emotional interview with Access Hollywood in 2022, Jim Carrey shared his desire for a quieter life away from the spotlight.
"Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious," he said at the time.
The 'In Living Color' further expressed, "I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough."
'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' returns with a star-studded cast
Despite his self-deprecating humor about needing the cash, it's hard to deny that the 'Sonic' films have become some of the biggest successes of Jim Carrey's career, with the first two movies grossing a combined $725 million worldwide.
For the third installment, Keanu Reeves has joined the cast as Shadow. Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey have reprised their roles as Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails, respectively, alongside Carrey's Dr Robotnik, for the action-packed adventure.
'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on December 20, 2024.
Earlier this year, Carrey celebrated his 62nd birthday in style, with comedian Jeff Ross describing the celebration as "The Laugh Supper." Fans marveled at the "insane" guest list that included some of Hollywood’s brightest stars including Adam Sandler and Bill Burr.
