WASHINGTON, DC: Ashley Biden faced social media backlash for her verbal gaffe during the White House Pride Month celebration on June 26, 2024, drawing comparisons to her father, President Joe Biden.

Despite the First Daughter's speech advocating for LGBTQ+ youth, a momentary mix-up led to a wave of online trolling.

Ashley Biden trolled for Pride Month speech gaffe

Ashley Biden, the 43-year-old daughter of President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, attended the Pride Month celebration on the South Lawn of the White House. Wearing a glamorous rainbow-colored dress, she delivered a heartfelt speech emphasizing the importance of protecting LGBTQ+ youth.

However, during her address, she stumbled over her words, accidentally mixing up the "T" and "G" in LGBTQ+. This slip was captured on video and widely shared on social media, with people comparing her to her father, who is known for his occasional verbal gaffes.

"Like father like daughter lol," one social media user wrote on X.

"Looks like someone could use a refresher course in their ABCs... or should I say, their LGBTQs!" another said.

"It runs in the family," someone else added.

"She's definitely Biden's daughter," one comment read.

"So are they all on drugs?" another asked.

Ashley Biden's message and her father's history with gaffes

Despite the stumble, Ashley Biden's speech was a call for LGBTQ+ children to be "loved, accepted and supported." She highlighted the struggles many face, noting how "too many LGBTQ+ children grow up at homes that don't accept them" and experience bullying.

Her message resonated with the invited audience, who cheered her on as she concluded her remarks, the Daily Mail reported.

That said, President Joe Biden notably has a history of verbal missteps. These gaffes have led some to question his capability to serve a second term, particularly given his age of 81.

A recent Department of Justice (DOJ) report found that Biden, who had illegally withheld classified federal documents, should not be prosecuted because a jury would likely view him as "a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory" and side against the DOJ.

This assessment has fueled calls from some lawmakers to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove the president for incompetence.

Joe Biden’s LGBTQ+ policy actions

On the same day as daughter Ashley Biden’s speech, President Joe Biden took significant action to support the LGBTQ+ community. He issued pardons to veterans convicted under the former Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which criminalized sodomy. This law, in place since 1951, was revised in 2013 to prohibit only forcible acts.

The pardoned service members can now apply for proof that their convictions have been erased and petition to have their military discharges upgraded.

President Biden's use of his pardon powers comes during Pride Month and shortly before a high-profile fundraiser with LGBTQ+ donors in New York.

He is working to solidify support within the Democratic-leaning queer community ahead of the presidential election. According to GLADD, Biden has the support of approximately 68 percent of registered LGBTQ voters, compared to 15 percent for his Republican rival Donald Trump.

Since taking office, President Biden has rolled back several Trump-era policies affecting the LGBTQ+ community. One of his first actions was to repeal a ban on transgender people serving in the military, which had been instituted during the Trump administration.

In contrast, Trump had rolled back healthcare protections for transgender individuals under Obamacare, although he was the first Republican president to recognize Pride Month in 2019.
