HOUSTON, TEXAS: First Lady Jill Biden drew backlash after her latest comments on former President Donald Trump during a fundraising event in Houston on Saturday night, January 27, where she accused him of undermining her husband, President Joe Biden, for political gain.

The event marked a key moment in Jill Biden's three-day fundraising swing through South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Texas, strategically designed to highlight Joe Biden's accomplishments in office and garner crucial campaign funds.

Opening salvos in Houston

Addressing a room full of donors to her husband's re-election campaign, Jill Biden didn't mince words as she expressed her frustration with Trump's public opposition to a border compromise currently in negotiation within the Senate, per the Houston Chronicle.

She vehemently stated, "You see what happened today with the border, and now Trump is trying to do everything he can to make Joe look bad, you know, even at the lives — sacrificing lives of so many people just for his own political gain."

"I know it's early to start, but I want you to sort of think after you leave tonight that yes, I am committed to a democracy. And yes, I'm going to fight as hard as I can and not let anything like 2016 happen again," she added.

Jill Biden's increased role on the campaign trail has positioned her as a vocal defender against what both Bidens refer to as "MAGA Republicans," viewing them as a significant threat to democracy. President Biden's recent endorsement of tough new border restrictions is seen as an alignment with the sentiments expressed by Jill Biden.

According to advisors cited by the Wall Street Journal, the first lady's visceral reaction to the Trump administration's family separation policy and the 'Remain in Mexico' program played a significant role in shaping Biden's current border policy.

Social media backlash

However, the first lady's criticisms of Trump sparked quite a backlash on social media.

"Sorry, Dr. Jill, old Joe doesn’t need any help in the 'looking bad' department. Give me a break," one posted on X.

"Hey Jill, Trump doesn't have to do anything to make senile Biden look bad," another added.

"NO, NOPE. Biden looks like a failure all by himself," someone else chimed in.

Border deal dynamics

President Biden has embraced the border deal, strategically connecting it to aid for Ukraine, which is a critical priority for his administration. The proposed Senate border plan, still in progress, grants the Department of Homeland Security new emergency authority to shut down the border if daily average illegal crossings reach a specified threshold.

Republicans continually point to the historic numbers of migrants arriving during Biden's presidency, with border crossings hitting another record in December, totaling 249,785 arrests on the Mexican border.

Former President Trump, positioning himself as a potential Republican presidential nominee for 2024, criticized the Senate bill, emphasizing the need for a "Strong, Powerful, and essentially 'PERFECT' Border." He argued that any deal should meet specific goals, or "we are better off not making a deal."

As the 2024 campaign gains momentum, the border issue remains a focal point, with Biden's approval rating on immigration issues hitting a record low, according to a CBS News poll
