Jonathan Majors 'disappointed' as judge tosses motion to drop guilty verdict in Grace Jabbari's DV case
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former Marvel actor Jonathan Majors' conviction on assault and harassment charges has been upheld and he is expected to be sentenced on April 8 after a New York judge dismissed a motion on Wednesday, April 3, to set the case aside.
Jonathan Majors upholds respect for the process
Despite feeling "disappointed" at the outcome as the sentencing will go forward next week, Majors "upholds respect for the process," Jonathan Majors' attorney Priya Chaudhry told TMZ shortly after the judge tossed the motion.
Chaudhry said, "He continues to draw strength from his friends, fans, family, and dogs, harnessing his art and creativity."
The attorney added, "As he eagerly anticipates closing this chapter, he looks forward to redirecting his time and energy fully toward his family and his art."
What is Jonathan Majors guilty of?
Majors, the 'Creed III' actor, was found guilty of reckless assault in the third degree and a noncriminal charge of harassment as a violation in December of last year involving his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.
The 'Ant-Man' actor was acquitted on another assault charge and one count of aggravated harassment.
In February, Majors' attorney submitted a motion requesting Judge Michael Gaffey to overturn the verdict and exonerate him of the charges. Following this, prosecutors filed a response, advocating for the judge to reject Majors' motion.
Judge Gaffey dismissed the defense's motion on Monday, April 1, as reported by CNN. Majors is set to be sentenced on April 8 and faces up to one year behind bars.
How did Jonathan Majors get involved in domestic violence?
In March 2023, 'The Last Man in San Francisco' actor and his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, a British dancer and choreographer were in the backseat of a chauffeured car in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.
Last year, prosecutors informed the court that Jabbari seized his phone upon seeing a text message stating, "Wish I was kissing you right now," which she presumed was from another woman.
In an attempt to get his phone back, he pulled Jabbari's finger, wrenched her arm behind her back, and struck her face. The driver stopped the vehicle and Jabbari attempted to exit but Majors threw her back in.
The video of the fight was also released by the prosecutors. It showed Majors putting Jabbari back in the SUV before she was seen chasing Majors on the streets of New York.
Jonathan's defense was not convinced the charges were justified.
Jonathan Majors' 911 call and alleged suicide attempt
Majors spent part of the night in a hotel but later returned home, prosecutors said, according to Daily Mail.
He discovered Jabbari, who claimed she had fallen asleep, although Majors was convinced she had become unconscious after a suicide attempt.
Majors made a 911 call and when the dispatcher inquired about the incident with Jabbari, he said, "I don't know."
Police arrested Majors on domestic abuse allegations, but he was released with a limited temporary restraining order. The following day, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office filed three counts of third-degree assault, one count of second-degree harassment, and one count of aggravated harassment against the actor.
