WASHINGTON, DC: The New York Times columnists and writers have expressed doubts about Vice President Kamala Harris' electability and excitement as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.

After President Joe Biden stepped aside on Sunday, July 21, and endorsed Harris, the publication sought opinions from eight columnists and contributors, none of whom considered her their first choice.

Gov Gretchen Whitmer tops the list of replacing Joe Biden instead of Kamala Harris

According to the publication, nine different candidates were deemed more capable of defeating former president Donald Trump and more likely to inspire enthusiasm among voters.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was seen as the most exciting candidate, receiving an average score of 7.1 compared to Harris' 5.8.

Other Democrats, such as Senator Raphael Warnock, Senator Mark Kelly, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, were also viewed as more exciting than Harris.

NYT columnist says 'real democratic choice is being sidelined' with Kamala Harris' POTUS nomination

In the electability category, Kamala Harris received a score of 4.6, whereas Sen Josh Shapiro scored 7 and Sen Mark Kelly 6.6. Kentucky Gov Andy Beshear got 6.5, and Gov Gretchen Whitmer 6.4.

Sen Warnock, Maryland Gov Wes Moore, Illinois Gov JB Pritzker, Sen Chris Murphy, and California Gov Gavin Newsom were all seen as more likely to defeat Trump than Harris.

"Even Biden fans see Harris as one of the weakest elements of his administration. A country desperate for change would bristle at the feeling that once again, real democratic choice is being sidelined in favor of the most deserving insider," wrote New York Times columnist Pamela Paul.

"And Harris is a fundamentally weak candidate. She fizzled out early in her first presidential run and floundered in the vice presidency," she added.

Ross Barkan argued that despite a "feeble electoral track record" Kamala will "benefit from a likely unified Democratic establishment."

"She can forcefully press the case against Trump on abortion rights. It won’t hurt that she’d be the nation’s first female president and only the second nonwhite politician to occupy the Oval Office," Barkan added.

Internet divided over Kamala Harris' appointment as Joe Biden's replacement

Internet reactions mirrored the opinions of the publication's staffers. However, all didn't think they were correct in their opinion.

"Wrong choice looms around democratic," wrote one user. Another added, "They aren't wrong."

A third commented, "Absolutely... she left early last time around because she had no chance. I don't see her doing anything in the past 4 years to change anyone's minds."

Other comments included, "But Harris seems reliable to her handlers." One more wrote, "She is just terrible!"

Another observed, "Democrats appear to disagree," while someone else noted, "But not as embarrassing to watch."

"They’re not. I’ve never seen Democratic enthusiasm higher than it’s been the last 24 hours," countered one commenter.

Another highlighted, "@VP received the LARGEST 24 hrs. small donor donation hall ever. People are excited @nytimes."
