WASHINGTON, DC: Albany lawmakers severely criticized Governor Kathy Hochul for her abrupt decision to abandon congestion pricing by putting the brakes on a last-ditch financing proposal on Friday, June 7, for the MTA, according to the New York Post.

Notably, lawmakers would adjourn the capital and the legislative session without reaching an agreement on a rebranded IOU that would have replaced the $1 billion in year congestion pricing revenue that would have been collected for the failing transit agency for the next fifteen years, according to state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

Albany stops MTA funding plan after Kathy Hochul's move to ditch congestion pricing

Following nearly two days of frantic deliberation among lawmakers over whether and how to restore the lost MTA income, Stewart-Cousins said at around 5:30 pm on Friday, "I will not be back tomorrow."

Notably, Hochul reiterated her decision to put the initiative on indefinite hold and said she didn't think the MTA board needed to vote to reverse the plan.

She Informed reporters in a heated capitol press conference on Friday evening, "I will be very clear, the MTA is taking necessary action to reflect a pause of this program."

According to Hochul, she is 'committed' to collaborating with legislative leaders to obtain funds for the MTA capital plan. 

Notably, congestion pricing supporters celebrated the postponement as a victory. Starting on June 30, automobiles would have been charged $15 to enter Manhattan below 60th Street.

State Sen John Liu (D-Queens) posted on X, "Governor’s proposed IOU was nothing more than a pinky promise that the bond market would NEVER believe let alone finance, and would have been the nail in the coffin for congestion pricing. No thanks!"



 

Assemblyman Harvey Epstein (D-Manhattan) added, "It forces a longer conversation about what we should do and I hope she (Hochul) reverses course and allows congestion pricing to go into effect."

Notably, years' worth of MTA money might be at risk due to the delay when Hochul abandoned the contentious congestion plan without providing a clear Plan B to replace the lost revenue other than a tax increase that was swiftly and loudly condemned.

Moreover, Amid political instability, Hochul was the one issue on which the New York political community could truly agree.

Just two days before the state legislative session ended, Hochul made the unexpected decision on Wednesday, June 5, to halt congestion pricing indefinitely. While many in and around New York City had long been worried about the effect of the tolls on the working class, the announcement was welcomed by many.

A user posted on X, "She is powerless" while one added, "Wax Face Hochul must resign."



 



 

A person also stated, "Hochul is only pumping the brakes ahead of the election to keep her base from voting against her. As soon as she is elected, the MTA funding plan will be implemented and you will be stuck with it and her for years to come. Be smart people. Don't fall for it" whereas one mentioned, "Bet the money, Kathy. You might win."
