WASHINGTON DC, UNITED STATES: South Dakota Gov Kristi Noem, a top contender for former President Donald Trump's vice presidential pick, revealed she was not formally vetted to be the running mate.

Appearing on NBC News 'Meet the Press' on Sunday, June 23, the Republican confirmed that she had not "received any paperwork" to join the ex-president's White House run. "I've had conversations with the president, and I know that he is the only one who will be making the decisions on who will be his vice president," she said.

Earlier this month, Noem proposed in a CNN interview that having a woman as a running mate would help Trump win the swing states in November.

Noem, however, reversed her stance on the necessity of a woman as Trump's vice presidential candidate when asked whether she thought that could help the former president win in November.

"He needs to pick the best person for the job," she told guest moderator Peter Alexander, adding the MAGA spearhead should "pick someone that will help him win."

With less than a month before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump is expected to announce his running mate, he reportedly narrowed the list to three Republicans, namely Sen Marco Rubio, Sen JD Vance, and North Dakota Gov Doug Burgum.

Noem, who topped the initial shortlist, was pushed back after her memoir, published earlier this year, drew backlash over the revelation of killing her puppy for being aggressive.

However, the South Dakota governor refused to answer whether her dog-killing controversy cost her vice presidential chances.

"I would say that that was a story from 20 years ago about me protecting my children from a vicious animal," she said, later adding, "The reason it's in my book is because that book is filled with challenging times and hard decisions."
