Liam Hemsworth 'envious' of Glen Powell's success after losing out 'Expendables 3' as career graph dips
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Glen Powell's career is on a meteoric rise, with each new project boosting his success. However, this surge in prominence seems to have left Australian actor Liam Hemsworth feeling "envious."
According to a recent report from New Idea magazine, the two actors, who are well-known from the audition circuit, have experienced very different career paths: while Powell's star is rising, Hemsworth appears to be in a slump.
Liam Hemsworth's Hollywood presence fades as Glen Powell's star rises
A source told the publication, "He'd barely be recognized at a Hollywood party these days," referring to Liam Hemsworth.
The source added, "Meanwhile, Glen has a mailbox full of scripts, profiles in Vanity Fair and is being lauded as the man single-handedly bringing back movie heart-throbs. Of course Liam's put out."
The source also revealed that the rivalry between the two actors flared up when they both vied for a highly sought-after role in a major action blockbuster.
Glen Powell ultimately secured the role in the third 'Expendables' film in 2014, taking over from Liam Hemsworth, who appeared in the second installment in 2012 but did not return for the third.
"Essentially, Glen was cast in his spot," the source claimed. "There's no doubt Glen has picked up where Liam left off."
While Liam Hemsworth has not had a massive blockbuster role since 2014's 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1,' he has continued to work steadily.
In contrast, Glen Powell has recently achieved success with several popular projects.
Liam Hemsworth and Glen Powell in their own genre of success
In 2022 and 2024, Liam Hemsworth starred in the action films 'Poker Face' and 'Land of Bad,' respectively. He also took over the lead role in the Netflix series 'The Witcher' after Henry Cavill's departure in 2022.
He gained significant recognition for his portrayal of Gale Hawthorne in 'The Hunger Games' series, which established him as a leading figure in Hollywood.
Recently, he stars in the upcoming war film 'Land of Bad,' where he plays Sergeant JJ Kinney, a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) on a military rescue mission in the Philippines, alongside Russell Crowe.
This film also features a notable collaboration with his brother, Luke Hemsworth, who appears in the movie as well.
On the other hand, Glen Powell's role in the critically acclaimed film 'Top Gun: Maverick' was well-received, and his comedy 'Anyone but You' also performed well
Powell has recently emerged as a rising star in Hollywood, recognized for his performances in romantic comedies and dramas, a departure from the prevalent action genre trends.
His breakthrough roles include 'Hidden Figures' and 'Set It Up.' He has since garnered attention for his leading roles in 'Twisters and Hit Man,' the latter of which he co-wrote and produced.
'Twisters,' a long-awaited sequel to the 1996 film 'Twister,' debuted with an estimated $80.5 million at the box office, far exceeding expectations and setting the highest opening for a live-action film this summer.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka, and Paul Scheer.
In the film, Daisy Edgar-Jones portrays Kate Cooper, a young woman traumatized by a tornado who is drawn back into storm-chasing when her friend Javi (Ramos) introduces her to a new system for mapping storm paths.
However, they come into conflict with Tyler Owens (Powell), a flashy storm chaser who endangers his life to get close to tornadoes for profitable social media content.
