Internet divided as Democratic Congresswomen wear white to SOTU to raise attention for 'women's rights'
WASHINGTON DC: Democratic Congresswomen came up with a unique way to raise attention towards 'women's rights' in the nation with a particular focus on reproductive rights.
Dozens of Democratic women lawmakers attended President Joe Biden's State of the Union address wearing white outfits to bring attention to the issue, as reported by the New York Post.
The distinctive collaboration was organized by the members of the Democratic Women's Caucus and the Pro-Choice Caucus in light of several conservative states restricting abortion access after the US Supreme Court revoked Roe v Wade in 2022. Since the overturning of the legislation, 21 states have banned or put severe restrictions on abortion laws, as per the New York Times.
The move was also a call out against the Alabama Supreme Court's recent ruling to consider frozen embryos as children. The controversial ruling brought the state's in-vitro fertilization facilities to a standstill as many feared legal liabilities.
The Democratic Congresswomen's move comes at a time when many fear the future of reproductive rights if former President Donald Trump wins the November election. Recently, he has stated about a potential 15-week window to ban abortions if he becomes the next President.
Reproductive rights take center stage in Biden's State of the Union speech
Women's reproductive rights are undoubtedly one of the focal points of the 2024 presidential election, which will be a Biden-trump rematch.
According to ABC News, in his final State of the Union address of the presidential term, Biden underscored abortion pledging to restore Roe v Wade in the event of his re-election. He also urged Congress to pass legislation to legalize nationwide abortion access and criticized Republicans for obstructing a vote on IVF protections.
"To my friends across the aisle, don't keep this waiting any longer. Guarantee the right to IVF! Guarantee it nationwide," the President said.
Democratic Congresswoman shows their commitment to cause
Some Democratic Congresswomen joining the Women's Caucus and the Pro-Choice Caucus took to their social media accounts to express their support.
Rep. Robin Kelly of Illinois wrote on X, "As the hours count down to President Biden's State of the Union, I've joined my @DemWomenCaucus colleagues in all white to symbolize our joint commitment to women's rights," adding, "We will never stop advocating for women, from reproductive rights to workplace equality."

Amanda Zurawski, a Texas woman suing the state for denying her an abortion despite her unborn child's fatal condition, also attended the State of the Union wearing white as a guest of House Minority Whip Rep. Katherine Clark.

Now, her ability to start a family is once again under attack by the MAGA effort to criminalize IVF.

"These women are no suffragettes. This cultural appropriation in the worst way. Disingenuous & hateful," read a response.

On the other hand someone else wote, "At the press conference, a woman stopped us staffers, and said, 'I'm sorry your generation has less rights than mine' - These women are fighting to restore and protect those rights! I'm so glad to call the @DemWomenCaucus my fellowship & to get to work with such amazing women!"
