WASHINGTON, DC: House Speaker Mike Johnson called for further investigation into Hunter Biden related to "payouts from foreign countries" after he was convicted in the federal gun trial on Tuesday, June 11.

The statement shared by Johnson over the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has earned him widespread criticism, as netizens pointed out the stark distinction between his response to Hunter Biden's federal convictions and those of former President Donald Trump, who was found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business documents at the Manhattan Criminal Court on May 30.

Conviction of Hunter Biden

According to CNN, Hunter Biden was found guilty by a jury in Wilmington, Delaware, on three federal felony gun charges. The first two counts were for lying about his drug use on a federal background check form during the purchase of a firearm, and the third count was for having the item while addicted to a controlled substance.

Sentencing is usually set for 120 days following a verdict, the judge stated in the trial. The convict could face up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $750,000 at sentencing. However, since Hunter Biden is a first-time offender, he is likely to receive far less.

Speaker Mike Johnson's post following Hunter Biden's conviction

Taking to X, Johnson posted, "A year ago, Hunter Biden was offered a sweetheart deal that would have allowed him to bypass the justice system on these charges. Because whistleblowers spoke out and House Republicans sounded the alarm, Hunter was brought to court. Today he was found guilty of all charges."

"Now it’s time for DOJ to investigate the millions of dollars in payouts from foreign countries looking to curry favor with his father," he continued. "We will continue to demand accountability for the corrupt business dealings of the Biden family."

The stance sharply contrasted with the one Johnson took following the hush money trial conviction of the presumptive GOP nominee. He had stated in an interview back then, "I'm telling you that the people see right through it. I've been all across the country ... doesn't matter whether I am in a blue state or a red state, people are disgusted by this."

He slammed the judge overseeing Trump's case to be "tainted" and an "open Biden-supporter," and accused the justice system of "double standards" after Trump was unanimously found guilty by jury members.

Internet trolls Mike Johnson

"Trump was found guilty of 34 felonies. Where’s the same energy from you for that? Hypocrite," a user responded to the Speaker's post on X.

"While you’re moving the goalposts, have you noticed that Democrats have not blamed the judge or jury or called for a Civil War because the son of the President was found guilty in a court of law," wrote another.

"The difference between President Biden and Donald Trump is blinding, President Biden said he would accept the verdict and would not pardon his son while Trump is running around whining about a rigged system. This blows a hole in Trump and Republicans' conspiracy theory about the DOJ. The choice this November could not be clearer," stated a third.

"Contrast this tweet Johnson posted after Trump's verdict," noted a fourth user.

"Why would they waste their time when you all have been doing the investigation for them and have found absolutely nothing? You're supposed to refer charges, but they don't exist," posted a fifth.
