Nancy Guthrie case: Doorbell images of suspect taken on separate dates, sources say
TUSCON, ARIZONA: New details have emerged in the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, as sources say doorbell camera footage captured a masked individual at her home on two separate occasions.
The case, involving the mother of "Today" host Savannah Guthrie, has triggered a federal investigation and nationwide appeals for information.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released security images in an effort to identify the person seen on the property. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Nancy's disappearance from her home in Tucson, Arizona.
Surveillance images raise questions about timeline
According to sources familiar with the investigation, a masked individual believed to be connected to Nancy Guthrie's disappearance was captured on her doorbell camera days before she vanished.
Images released by the FBI show a suspect carrying a backpack on the morning of Sunday, February 1, the day she failed to attend church and was later reported missing.
The FBI has stated that footage from that morning depicts an armed individual appearing to tamper with the camera and place branches in front of the lens. Separate images, however, show a man at the front door without a backpack on a date before February 1, sources told ABC News.
One working theory, sources said, is that the suspect initially approached the property, noticed the camera and retreated only to return later to disable it. The apparent gap in timing has led investigators to ask neighbors to review home surveillance footage dating back to January 1. Although several individuals have been detained during the investigation, no suspect has been publicly identified.
In a statement to Fox News, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said, “There is no date or time stamp associated with these images. Therefore, any suggestion that the photographs were taken on different days is purely speculative.” Nancy Guthrie has been missing since February 1, when authorities believe she was abducted from her home in Tucson. The investigation remains ongoing.
Savannah Guthrie announces $1 million reward, makes emotional appeal
Savannah Guthrie and her family are offering an additional reward of up to $1 million for any information leading to the whereabouts of their mother, Nancy Guthrie. The “Today” show co-host announced on social media on Tuesday, February 24.
In a video posted to Instagram, Guthrie expressed hope that her mother will be found but acknowledged uncertainty about the outcome. "She may be lost."
"She may already be gone. She may have already gone home to the Lord that she loves and is dancing in heaven with her mom and her dad and with her beloved brother Pierce and with our daddy," Guthrie said. "And if this is what is to be, then we will accept it, but we need to know where she is. We need her to come home."
