Savannah Guthrie weighs quitting ‘Today Show’ after mother’s mysterious disappearance
TUCSON, ARIZONA: ‘Today Show’ co-anchor Savannah Guthrie is reportedly considering leaving NBC’s flagship morning program as her mother’s disappearance continues without resolution, according to industry reports.
The move comes amid intense emotional strain and concern for her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, who vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, home more than three weeks ago in what authorities now consider a likely abduction.
Savannah Guthrie fears fame made mother target
Sources say the co-host is considering a permanent exit from the hit show after her mother was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona, at around 2 am on February 1. “This absolutely came out of the blue, and I think she’s really concerned that it was because of her job,” NewsNation’s Paula Froelich reported, citing sources.
She added that Savannah, who is said to be a “mess” as the search for her mother enters its third week, fears her fame made her mother more of a target “with bad characters.”
The high-profile journalist has been on indefinite leave from 'Today' as the search for Nancy continues, and friends and colleagues say she is “really concerned” that her public profile may have made her mother a target.
Savannah Guthrie filmed with mom before disappearance
Just months before Nancy disappeared, Savannah filmed a segment with her mother near her $1 million home, which is now a major crime scene.
Guthrie continues to ask for her mother’s safe return, and the emotional toll is evident. In one Instagram video, she looks straight at the camera and begs whoever is holding Nancy to come forward. “It’s never too late to do the right thing,” she says.
The family’s emotional messages continue to spread, which is why people across the country are still talking about the case.
In the NBC clip from November 2025, the mother-and-daughter duo teamed up for a piece called “Savannah’s Arizona Homecoming,” which also featured her sister Annie.
It documented the television star returning to her roots, including her alma mater and El Charro, the oldest family-owned Mexican restaurant in America, where she shared a meal with her family for the show.
“I have to come here every time I come home to Tucson,” Savannah said. Her mother has appeared in several segments for the show over the years since Savannah joined in 2012.
Meanwhile, sources have told Page Six that Savannah will be off the 'Today Show' for the “foreseeable future.” “The entire show and network is rallying together in support of our beloved colleague and friend as we navigate this unimaginable time,” the NBC source said.
