WASHINGTON, DC: Former Vice President Mike Pence has heavily criticized the announcement made by the former POTUS stating that the issue of abortion should be left to individual states.

Pence has stated that while Donald Trump played a role in the overturning of Roe v Wade, Republicans are no longer willing to take responsibility for the issue, according to DailyMail.

Mike Pence wrote in a post on X, “President Trump’s retreat on the Right to Life is a slap in the face to the millions of pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020.”

The former governor of Indiana continued, “By nominating and standing by the confirmation of conservative justices, the Trump-Pence Administration helped send Roe v Wade to the ash heap of history where it belongs and gave the pro-life movement the opportunity to compassionately support women and unborn children.”

What prompted former Veep Mike Pence’s response?

Former Vice President Mike Pence expressed strong disapproval of former President Donald Trump's position on abortion, following the latter's release of a four-minute video on social media regarding his position on the raging issue ahead of the 2024 general election.

Trump's announcement, which had been eagerly awaited, came after months of delay during which the 77-year-old MAGA strongman refused to reveal his stance on the controversial topic, which Democrats have been using to motivate their supporters since the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022.

Pence's criticism was just one of several negative reactions to the video from anti-abortion politicians and advocates on Monday, who have been pushing for a federal abortion ban.

In the video, Trump stated that he believes individual states should be responsible for making their own abortion laws and that he would not support a federal ban, despite having signaled his support for such a draconian ban just last month.

Trump declared in the video posted on his Truth Social platform, “We have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land.”

This change in his position came after reports suggested that the 2024 presumptive GOP nominee was contemplating supporting a 15-week ban on abortion, which would make it illegal for women to terminate their pregnancy after the first trimester.

Republicans in Congress, according to Pence, are "all too ready to wash their hands of the battle for life."

The former vice president argued that Republicans “win on life” when they “speak the truth boldly.”

Additionally, he declared that he would not let up " until we see the sanctity of life restored to the center of American law in every state in this country."

According to a statement released on Monday by Susan B Anthony Pro-Life America, the organization is "deeply disappointed" in Trump's stance and claims that leaving the matter up to the states "cedes the national debate to the Democrats."

The group opposed to abortion asserted that it will continue to "work tirelessly to defeat President Biden" come November.

Former VP Mike Pence had previously announced that he would not be endorsing Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 election.

This announcement followed the deterioration of their relationship after Pence proceeded to certify the 2020 election, despite Trump's false claims that the election was stolen.

In 2017, just days after Trump was inaugurated, Pence became the first vice president to join the anti-abortion March for Life gathering in Washington, DC.

A few years later, in 2020, Trump became the first sitting president to address the March for Life in person.

Throughout the Trump administration, Pence was committed to aiding in ending abortion in the United States and urged Trump to nominate justices who would overturn Roe v Wade.

In Monday’s video, Trump expressed gratitude to the six justices who overturned Roe v Wade and praised them for their "courage."

He also claimed responsibility for ending the controversial decision, stating that he was "proudly the person responsible" for its repeal.

Internet reacts as Mike Pence chastises Donald Trump on abortion

People on X shared their immediate reactions and opinions following the former vice president's blistering response to the 77-year-old former POTUS's change of stance on the abortion issue in the United States.

One X user remarked, "Mike pence is irrelevant and nobody cares what he has to say anymore next please."

Another user said, "No one cares what Mike is outraged about this time."

Another user wrote, "Mike Pence? Nobody even remembers him, much less cares what he thinks. Trump is right on the abortion issue. There is no national consensus on abortion one way or the other. Leave it to the individual states to decide."

One user argued, "One thing about VP Pence I’ll always appreciate is his belief in the sanctity of human life in the womb. I feel the same way… but the whole point of ‘overturning’ RvW was to give power back to the states. Going the other way with it will lose votes. Can’t afford that."

Another X user asked, "When is trump going to prison?"

Finally, this user tweeted, "He is trying all the angles to discourage people planning to vote for Trump."
