WASHINGTON, DC: Sen Josh Hawley (R-MO) and other hardline conservatives are urging Alejandro Mayorkas, the head of the Department of Homeland Security, to step down in light of the departure of the head of the Secret Service, according to the New York Post.

Sen Hawley expressed his stance following Kimberly Cheatle's resignation as the director of the US Secret Service on Tuesday, July 23.

Cheatle faced criticism for providing ambiguous responses during the Congressional Oversight Committee Hearing on Monday regarding security lapses before the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

“Now, Mayorkas must do the same,” Hawley wrote on X on Tuesday.

What did conservatives and Republicans say regarding Alejandro Mayorkas’ resignation?

Alejandro Mayorkas was also urged to step down by Jim DeMint, a former Republican US senator from South Carolina and former president of The Heritage Foundation.

“DHS Secretary Mayorkas must resign as well,” DeMint tweeted, adding, “He has oversight of Cheatle and Secret Service, which lied that Trump had not been denied requests for more Secret Service protection. He should step down immediately.”

The United States Secret Service is part of the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS chief Alejandro Mayorkas’s handling of the emergent border crisis led to his impeachment by US House Republicans in February. During his tenure, over 12 million foreign nationals illegally crossed the US border.

Mayorkas became the first sitting cabinet member in US history to be impeached. However, the charges were dismissed by the Democratic-controlled Senate without a trial.

Riley Gaines, a former college swimmer who is now a political activist, also criticized Mayorkas.

“Cheatle answered to Mayorkas. Why hasn’t HE had a press conference on this? Why didn’t HE fire Cheatle before she resigned? Has HE been to the site in Butler, PA?” Gaines posted on X, adding, “This administration is disastrous and it would be the same with Kamala. The whole house needs to be cleaned.”

Mayorkas's resignation was also demanded by political pundit Monica Crowley, a former assistant secretary for Public Affairs for the US Department of the Treasury.

“It’s not enough for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign,” Crowley stated on X. “She and her boss Open Borders Traitor Alejandro Mayorkas MUST be criminally charged, prosecuted, and jailed.”

Mayorkas released an official statement on X regarding Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle’s resignation.

“I am grateful to Kimberly Cheatle for her leadership as the Director of the United States Secret Service and her lifelong devotion to our country,” Mayorkas said.

“The men and women of the United States Secret Service risk their lives every day to protect others. They make the Secret Service the finest protection agency in the world.”
