Prince Harry and Meghan Markle eyeing Portugal home as life in US hasn't met expectation, says ex-staffer
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly exploring a new home in Portugal as their life in the United States has not turned out to be “what they thought it would be,” according to a former palace staffer.
According to the New York Post, the couple has allegedly purchased one of 300 upcoming residences at the luxurious CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club, situated about 81 miles south of Lisbon, for more than $4.7 million.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's move to Portugal may signify reconciliation with royal family
Grant Harrold, who previously served as King Charles’ personal butler, suggests that this potential move indicates the couple is “edging their way back in the direction of the UK.”
He elaborates, “But maybe living in the States wasn’t what they thought it would be and that could be why they’re now supposedly edging their way back in the direction of the UK.” Harrold previously noted that their rumored relocation may signify an effort to reconcile with the royal family.
While the exact reasons for choosing Portugal remain unclear, Harrold mentioned that the couple's connections and the appealing climate—similar to Montecito, California—could be factors in their decision.
He states, “There’s no obvious reason for choosing Portugal as a location to live, but let’s not forget that it’s not unusual for royals to set up overseas. Some have historically moved to France; Princess Margaret used to spend a lot of time in Mauritius, so Harry would be following in the footsteps of other royals who have done something similar.”
The Sussexes face EU citizenship hurdles and business uncertainties in Portugal
Before settling into their new life in Portugal, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle face a significant hurdle: obtaining European Union citizenship. This citizenship would enable them to travel freely across the Schengen Area, which includes 29 countries. The couple's transatlantic move also raises questions about their various business ventures and how they will manage them from the EU.
Meghan, 43, has yet to launch her anticipated lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, with its release date now uncertain due to a trademark issue.
Harrold emphasizes that their business pursuits “can very much continue wherever they are in the world,” despite reports of a “very bad state” in their professional relationship.
He also believes the couple will maintain their connections in Hollywood, stating, “The friendships they have I’m sure they will keep, as it is for anyone who moves abroad; friends will come and visit. I don’t think it will be the end of their celebrity friendships at all.”
