LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran was caught using a homophobic insult towards a heckling fan during a challenging game against the Houston Astros, The incident occurred as the Red Sox fell to the Astros for the third consecutive game.

Jarren Duran caught using homophobic slur during game

The slur, "Shut up you f***ing f*****," was clearly audible on NESN's broadcast. The network’s commentators, including play-by-play announcer Dave O'Brien, did not address the comment.

O'Brien focused instead on Duran’s performance, noting that "Duran is at .296 with runners in scoring position for the year."

Duran, who earned his first All-Star selection in 2024, has since expressed remorse for his actions. In a statement, he acknowledged the severity of his language and apologized to both the Red Sox organization and the LGBTQ community.

"During tonight's game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan," Duran said. "I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person."

Jarren Duran heckler's comments ring true

The fan’s heckling reportedly included a remark suggesting Jarren Duran needed a tennis racket to hit Astros starter Hunter Brown. The fan may have been right, as Duran ended up striking out three times in the game.

The Red Sox, who have now lost four straight games, including a three-game sweep by the Astros, are slipping in the American Wild Card race. They are set to face the Texas Rangers in a three-game series next.
