Sen JD Vance labeled 'monstrous' as he blames Joe Biden's 'rhetoric' for Trump assassination attempt

BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA: On Saturday, July 13, an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump led to a wave of reactions and accusations. Among the prominent voices was Senator JD Vance (R-OH), a top contender for Trump's vice presidential nomination, who blamed President Joe Biden's "rhetoric" for the incident.

During the rally, gunshots were heard, causing chaos as Trump was seen gripping his ear and falling to the ground before being quickly surrounded by Secret Service agents. Trump later posted on Truth Social that he had been wounded by a bullet.

The Secret Service confirmed that Trump was safe and the shooter was dead. A spokesperson for Trump announced that he was receiving treatment at a local medical facility.

JD Vance's reaction sparks backlash

Senator JD Vance immediately responded to the incident by accusing President Biden of fostering a hostile environment with his campaign rhetoric.

Vance wrote, "Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs." He further stated, "That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination."

Vance's comments sparked a strong backlash on social media. Critics condemned his statement, arguing that it was irresponsible and dangerous.

"So by that logic, Trump's rhetoric led to the January 6th insurrection?" one posted on X.

"Delete your post. You are promoting retaliation for a situation that you know nothing about," another wrote.

"Monstrous and low. Even for you. Delete this," someone else fumed.

"Shame on you. This is irresponsible and dangerous. Serious people in positions of leadership should never speak this way," read a comment.

"Utterly irresponsible by this man who holds public office," another chimed in.

In the aftermath of the shooting, President Biden issued a statement expressing his concern for Trump's well-being.

"I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania," Biden said. "I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."

Trump's recovery and bipartisan condemnation

Following his treatment, Trump was released from the hospital later that night, CBS News reported. The Trump campaign thanked law enforcement and first responders for their swift action. "President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility," the campaign's statement read.

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that the House would conduct a thorough investigation into the events. "The American people deserve to know the truth," he said. "We will have Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and other appropriate officials from DHS and the FBI appear for a hearing before our committees ASAP."

Political figures from both parties condemned the attack.

Vice President Kamala Harris stated, "Doug and I are relieved that he is not seriously injured. We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting. ... Violence such as this has no place in our nation. We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence."

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whose family has also experienced political violence, expressed her relief that Trump was safe.

"As one whose family has been the victim of political violence, I know firsthand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. I thank God that former President Trump is safe. As we learn more details about this horrifying incident, let us pray that all those in attendance at the former President's rally today are unharmed," Pelosi posted on X.

Pennsylvania's Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro also condemned the violence.

"Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable," he wrote. "It has no place in Pennsylvania or the United States. I have been briefed on the situation. @PAStatePolice are on the scene in Butler County and working with our federal and local partners."
