WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA: Republican Sen Todd Young has explicitly cleared that he would not vote for former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, Mediaite reported.

On Monday, March 18, during a conversation with a local Indiana reporter, Young stated, "I won't be voting for Biden. I also won't be voting for Trump."

The Senator representing Indiana had recently declared that he had no plans to endorse the former president regardless of his decisive victories in the Super Thursday primaries.

Todd Young emphasizes the need for 'principled conservatives' in the GOP

Speaking to the local reporter, the Republican lawmaker did not clarify which other candidate he would vote for in November.

"So, does that mean I leave it blank? Does that mean I identify another conservative who's almost certain not to be the next president of the United States and write them in? I haven't decided that, and I think that's a largely unimportant point. I don't know who goes in that line, if anyone," Young said.

The Senator, who is a conservative GOP member, had voted against the second Trump impeachment in 2021 following the January 6 Capitol attack allegedly instigated by the former president.

Nevertheless, Young was critical of Trump's baseless assertions and publicly condemned his 2020 election fraud claims and his anti-Ukraine stance since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022.

Further into the conversation, the Republican underscored that his denial to endorse any candidate could "reward one person at the expense of the other."

"My response is, at some point, principled conservatives need to incentivize our party, the Republican Party, to nominate somebody that principled conservatives can actually believe in. Stated differently, I'm tired of having my vote taken for granted. I think a lot of Hoosiers are," Young opined.

Trump crossed the 1215 threshold to secure the GOP nomination on March 12, and he will be officially nominated in July at the Republican National Convention for a rematch with President Joe Biden.

Internet reacts to Todd Young's statement

Netizens responded with mixed reactions to Young's decision not to cast his vote for Trump in November. Some mocked his position, comparing it to top GOP Sen Mitt Romney, who is a Trump critic. Meanwhile, another group lauded Young, and some criticized him.

One user mocked Young on Facebook, writing, "Todd Young is the New Mitt Romney." While another wrote, "It’s about time some republicans stand up to this bully and traitor."

A user on X remarked, "The GOP politicians speaking up, I assume, are the ones who haven't committed any crimes, so they can't be blackmailed like Lindsey Graham?"

"Actually a #DEMOCRAT (RINO) disguised as a #Republican," another person slammed the Senator.

Someone else commented on Facebook, "Well that's one Republican Senator that won't take a second 30 year mortgage out on his house to give All the money to Trump....Everyone say Amen to him."

Whereas an X user said, "The American people do not care what some pinhead rhino senator thinks."
