WASHINGTON, DC: Republican Senator Mitt Romney claimed that Joe Biden's campaign strategy, centered on portraying Donald Trump as a "threat to democracy",  was a "bust".

The Senator of Utah made the remarks to The New York Times responding to Biden's first campaign speech on January 5, the eve of the January 6 Capitol attack's third anniversary, condemning the former President's involvement in causing the insurrection.

"As a Biden campaign theme, I think the threat to democracy pitch is a bust," Romney wrote in a text message to a NYT reporter.

"January 6 will be four years old by the election. People have processed it, one way or another. Biden needs fresh material, a new attack, rather than kicking a dead political horse."

Romney, who recently called Trump a "human gumball machine," was among the seven Republicans who voted to convict the former President in his second impeachment trial.

The incumbent's campaign continues to firmly hang on to the black mark on US democracy in their attempt to defeat the real estate mogul in a likely Biden-Trump rematch in 2024.

According to Reuters, recounting the January 6 attack, Biden said, "He told the crowd to fight like hell. And all hell was unleashed. Then as usual he left the dirty work to others. He retreated to the White House."

Donald Trump downplays January 6 anniversary

As the President blasted his predecessor, Trump downplayed the event's significance in all his campaign speeches on January 6.

Despite facing federal charges over his attempt to overturn the 2020 election result, the GOP frontrunner continued stating the election was rigged.

Speaking at a rally in Clinton, Iowa, on January 6, Trump went to the extent of urging Biden to pardon the imprisoned Capitol rioters. Instead of calling them prisoners, the former President branded the insurrectionists as "hostages".

The presidential hopeful, accelerating his campaign in the Hawkeye state ahead of the January 15 caucuses, also continued to express his authoritarian tendencies, praising Chinese President Xi Jinping as "brilliant" and "smart".

Internet slams Mitt Romney

Social media users have outrightly disagreed with Romney's claims of January 6 losing importance as a campaign strategy.

Many reminded him that the day would not be forgotten until all those involved were punished.

One user wrote, "I think Romney has pretty well-reasoned opinions a lot of the time, but this is absolute nonsense."

Another user remarked, "Its not a campaign strategy. It's an observable fact. And if media fails to see that they will regret it when he starts yanking licenses and using government to censor their publications."

"It won't be over until every last person that participated in the insurrection is in prison," a third person added.

Another noted, "Romney himself was saved from harm Jan. 6. He still doesn’t get it."

While a fifth user disagreed with Romney's remarks outrightly stating "WRONG."

"If Romney really thinks that many of us have just "forgotten" J6...he is sadly mistaken," a sixth response read.

One user added, "Completely forgot there was an expiration date on protecting democracy."

Another slammed Romney, saying, "No, Mittens. I am not getting over an attempted overthrow of the government. The fact that you advocate doing so is a disgrace to whatever legacy you think you have. Close the door on your way out."
