Shakira opens up on her struggles after split from Gerard Pique, says ‘life hasn’t been kind’

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Shakira has faced hardships since parting ways with her longtime partner, Gerard Pique, nearly three years ago.

During an interview with Live From E! on Sunday, February 2, the Latin music icon shared her reflections on life post-breakup.

Shakira opens up on personal growth since 2022 split

During the 2025 Grammy Awards, Shakira said, "I've grown a lot. I've learned a lot of lessons. Life hasn't always been kind, but it's been a good teacher."

However, she assured fans that her strength remains intact, referencing her 2009 song 'She Wolf.' "The she wolf is still here," she said.

In an unexpected birthday celebration, Shakira marked her 48th birthday at the prestigious awards show.

"It's a gift to me, I'm sure," the 'Whenever Wherever' singer said.

"Five years ago, I was also at the Super Bowl, also on my birthday," she shared.

"So, it's a coincidence that these big moments always happen on my birthday. Maybe it's some sort of heavenly present," Shakira added.

Shakira wins Best Latin Pop album

During the ceremony at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Shakira won Best Latin Pop Album for 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.'

Jennifer Lopez, who shared the stage with her during the 2020 Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show, presented the award.

“Wow, this is incredible. Thank you so much,” Shakira said in her acceptance speech.

She also used her moment on stage to highlight an important social issue, dedicating the award to immigrants in the US.

“I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country. You are loved. You are worth it, and I will always fight with you,” she declared, referencing ongoing immigration issues under President Donald Trump's administration.

Shakira also paid tribute to hardworking women worldwide, adding, “To all of those women who work really hard every day to provide for their families, you are the true heroes. So this is for you, too.”

Shakira's painful separation from Gerard Pique

In June 2022, Shakira and Pique publicly announced their split in a joint statement.

"We regret to confirm that we are separating," they said, requesting privacy for the well-being of their children, their "maximum priority."

The breakup was marred by allegations of infidelity, with reports suggesting that Piqué cheated multiple times, including with his current girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti.

In June 2023, Shakira opened up about the painful ordeal in an interview with People.

"Everything happened at once," she admitted.

"My home was falling apart. I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU," she added.
