In March 2015, she received a diagnosis of stage III breast cancer, which had metastasized to her lymph nodes.
Following treatments including anti-estrogen therapy, a unilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, she announced remission in April 2017.

However, in February 2020, Doherty revealed that her cancer had returned as stage IV and had spread to her liver.
By June 2023, the cancer had advanced to her brain and later to her bones.
Despite undergoing a new treatment that showed promise in crossing the blood-brain barrier, she succumbed to the disease in July 2024.
