WASHINGTON, DC: During an interview on the ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’ show, former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper expressed concern that a prospective second term for former President Donald Trump would be characterized by the appointment of loyalists rather than political professionals.

Esper, who has previously expressed apprehension about the possibility of a second Trump term, emphasized the importance of taking the former president's “threat to democracy” seriously, per RawStory.

However, when host Maher inquired about his voting intentions in the 2024 election, Esper hesitated to provide a definitive response.

What did Bill Maher ask of Mark Esper on his show?

Maher asked Esper on Friday, "So you'll vote for Biden?"

However, the host cut Esper off right before he was about to say something.

Esper went on to make clear that he is "not there yet" in his support for the incumbent president.

"I'm definitely not voting for Trump, but I'm not there yet," the former US Defense Secretary remarked.

At that, Maher shot back, claiming he doesn't understand "smart people who doesn't understand binary" decisions, like the one that will be made in Joe Biden and Donald Trump's 2024 rematch.

"How can you not be there after what you just said?" Maher posed.

"There's no way I'll vote for Trump, but every day that Trump does something crazy, the door to voting for Biden opens a little bit more, and that's where I'm at," Esper clarified.

Maher promptly replied, "That's a slow opening door."
