PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA: Wesley Hunt, the US representative for Texas, thinks former president Donald Trump is making great progress with Black voters following his trip to Philadelphia to discuss policy with African Americans

On Tuesday, June 4, Hunt and Rep Byron Donalds, R-Fla, addressed a "packed house" in the progressive city in an attempt to draw attention to the Republican Party's agenda and policies ahead of the election.

Later, in an interview with Fox News, Hunt explained why he believes that more Black voters switching sides from the Democratic Party could result in Biden losing his reelection, claiming that Trump is driving this shift.

"Congress, Cognac, & Cigars" featured a discussion between Hunt and Donalds with former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya as moderator. Similar events will follow in Atlanta, Georgia; Detroit, Michigan; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Charlotte, North Carolina and other cities in states key to winning the 2024 presidential election.

"Trump's policies four years ago are not just Black issues, but they are American issues. And if President Trump is able to attain between 25 and 30% of the Black male vote, then Joe Biden cannot win," said Hunt.

He added Trump, "set a record for Black turnout in 2020" and can build on that number in November.

Wesley Hunt says he and Byron Donalds are trying to inspire the voters

Hunt said they are doing the work and trying to inspire voters by going into areas "where no conservative in the past three decades has bravely gone before."

"You haven't had voices like me and Byron Donalds that are willing to take the initiative to do what we've been doing over the course of the past year," said Hunt, per the outlet.

Wesley Hunt on the moment that stuck out during the event

During the event, Hunt recounted a particularly memorable moment when a Black woman and other family members of her who had left the Democratic Party spoke out. She talked about how the "draconian" treatment of "White liberal elites" during the Covid-19 pandemic made her realize that Democrats are not for her community, but rather for "White liberal elites."

The same woman also discussed how Democrats "broke up the Black family" because of welfare policies.

"So that conversation really stuck out to me, and let me know that not only is it Black men that we are targeting, but also there are a handful of Black women that are also on the table that we can also get because they're seeing the contrast as well," said Hunt adding that many of the attendees said they were planning to vote Republican for the first time.

Wesley Hunt is confident Republicans have a chance to win over Black voters this time

According to Hunt, these discussions are casting doubt on the reasons why successive generations of Black voters have supported the Democratic Party.

He maintained that by concentrating on policies and "stopping the race baiting," Republicans could now win over Black voters by "breaking the bonds and attachment" to the Democratic party.

"I am not a slave and nobody currently living is a slave owner. So at this point, I don't want to hear that conversation. I want to hear a conversation about what party is going to benefit us the most financially, how we are going to live the best and in the greatest country in the world," said Hunt, explaining that Black voters are concerned about the economy, "the hidden tax of inflation," and safe neighborhoods.

"The Democrat Party hasn't done anything for Black people in the last 30 years. It's time to give us a chance," Hunt added.

Wesley Hunt slams Joe Biden for the way he spoke to Black people in the past

While speaking candidly about the president's past remarks about African Americans, Hunt cited Biden's 2020 statement to Charlamagne Tha God that "if you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't Black."

Hunt also recalled when then-candidate Kamala Harris criticized Biden in 2020 for his past views against busing and working with segregationist senators.

"Now, you look at the contrast to President Trump. We have more money in our pocket. We had more money going to HBCUs. We had opportunity zones. And most importantly, these issues are again, American issues. When the Black community does better, America does better," Hunt said.

"Black people are saying, well, if these are the two choices that I have, I want to choose the person that I prospered under more than Joe Biden," he added. "And that's why they're hemorrhaging votes in the Black community."

Wesley Hunt credits Donald Trump for the surge in Black votes

As per Hunt, the reason why more Black voters are now siding with the Republican Party is because of Trump. "This is a Trump thing. Trump made great strides in the Black community in 2020. This was not the GOP, this was President Trump."

Recent polls suggest that minority voters seem to be losing interest in President Biden. According to polls conducted in May by the New York Times, Siena College, and the Philadelphia Inquirer, Trump leads in five of the six crucial battleground states where Biden defeated him by a narrow margin four years ago.

The polls showing Biden ahead of Trump among Black voters, 63% to 23%, are particularly worrisome for Democrats because that represents a significant decline from the 87% of Black voters who backed Biden in 2020 and helped him win Georgia and other swing states.

If Election Day results hold true, Black voters' support for Trump surpassing 20% of the total vote would represent the highest level of support for a GOP presidential candidate among this group in many years.

Internet says 'Trump train is coming'

Netizens also seemingly agreed with Hunt's remarks concerning Trump and Black voters and think that Biden's days are numbered now.

One user commented, "One of this matters. Joe is done. They just have to drag him to the convention to anoint Hillary." Another said, "The Trump train is coming."

"I mean, it's not that surprising. People are looking for change and feel like their needs aren't being met," voiced one user while another tweeted, "Been to Detroit lately? I suspect Trump’s gonna get a few more votes this time."

"Native America is overwhelmingly for Trump too," echoed one.
